Group 1 Moir Stakes betting tips, form and odds, September 29

Moonee Valley

THE $500,000 Group 1 Moir Stakes features on the first night racing card this Friday and it kicks off what should be a great spring carnival at Moonee Valley.

The 1200m feature includes Russian Revolution, Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign and quality sprinters Voodoo Lad and Sheidel.

It’s not the only quality race over the course of the night as the Stutt Stakes, Zoustar Stock Stakes and the Sarborough Stakes will keep punters entertained.

Race 1 – 3YO Plate (1200m)

Kobayashi looked well above average when winning back-to-back races in the autumn, but it hasn’t matured this time in. The Corstens-trained three-year-old colt finished fifth in the Vain Stakes which was credible, but it faded late behind Merchant Navy last start. It will need to regain its form, but this is an easier target.

Experimentation was scratched from an easier field earlier in the week which is a good sign. The Robert Smerdon-trained colt won by over four lengths last start at Pakenham and it looked to have plenty in reserve. That came on a slow track so the winning margins can increase, but the betting suggests it’s a winning chance at $4.20.

Race 1 tip: Kobayashi to win ($3.40) at CrownBet.com.au

Race 2 – R90 Handicap (1200m)

So You Too was only narrowly beaten last start and it typically shows improvement second up. The So You Think four-year-old gelding has rarely run a bad race over seven starts at this distance and it has form at stakes level when running third in the Euclase Stakes at Morphettville. It gets a nice inside draw its first look at Moonee Valley which will help, but Jeff Lloyd’s inexperience around the circuit is another concern.

Labuan Star has yet to win from five attempts at The Valley, but it’s coming off two wins from its last three starts. The Darren Weir-trained gelding won by 1.5 lengths at Mornington last start and its form prior came against some nice types. It loves this distance and it could sit just off the pace and strike late.

Race 2 tip: Labuan Star to win ($4.60) at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 3 – Scarborough Stakes (1200m)

Fox Swift has had the benefit of plenty of racing this campaign and its win last start was quality. The filly by Foxwedge won the Cap D’Antibes Stakes at Flemington and that stakes form should stack up well here. It has the ability to lead and also sit off the pace, so it could be a threat to the odds-on favourite.

Houtzen is drifting in the betting from $1.50 to $1.60, but the Magic Millions winner is the class runner in the field. The Toby Edmonds-trained sprinter didn’t handle the turn around this track last start, but the experience helps and its key will be jumping on terms and dictating the pace. That shouldn’t be a problem from barrier three and punters should be prepared to take the shorts.

Race 3 tip: Houtzen to win ($1.55) at Topbetta.com.au

Race 4 – 55 Second Challenge (955m)

Super Too has been well-supported at $2.80 following its win last start at Randwick. The Marc Connors-trained mare is a four-time winner over this distance from five starts, but it has never run at this track. It has quality form at Flemington behind some nice types and the punters are getting in behind it.

Madeenaty looks a top each way chance at $5. The noted speedster has been running in hot Sydney fields and it will likely fly the barriers and give them all something to chase. It has break-neck speed from the gates and the weight advantage over the favourite could help it.

Race 4 tip: Madeenaty to win ($5) at Ladbrokes.com.au

Race 5 – JRA Cup (2040m)

Winter might have come and gone, but Jon Snow remains one of the horses to beat. The Kiwi stayer is better suited to a heavy track as its record suggests, but there’s some rain around in the forecast which could help its chances. The ATC Derby winner has plenty of class and the Kiwi age-group stayers have already shown up this campaign with Bonneval and Humidor. Chance at $5.

Forget Star Exhibit went around last start after it reared and kicked jockey Mark Zahra off in the Dato Tan Chin Nam Stakes. The Weir-trained runner won the Anniversary Vase at Caulfield at its first start in Melbourne before running second in the Doomben Cup. It didn’t run well in the P.B. Lawrence Stakes, but it should strip fitter for this.

Race 5 tip: Star Exhibit to win ($4) at Sportsbet.com.au

Race 6 – Zoustar Stocks Stakes (1600m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1139518_06]

I Am a Star has been the best-backed runner in the field and punters are expecting a return to form. The Group 2 Sunline Stakes winner on this track hasn’t shown its best in three starts this campaign, but it hasn’t had the best of luck and it meets an easier field here. Nice chance at $3.

Hell or Highwater is the in-form runner having won its last three. The Lindsay Park-trained five-year-old is seemingly exceeding expectations this preparations and it rises in weight after winning with 54kg on its back last start. It has experience winning on this track and it loves this distance, but this is a tough ask.

Race 6 tip: I Am a Star to win ($3) at Topbetta.com.au

Race 7 – Group 1 Moir Stakes (1000m)

[rmOC_events_list event_ids=1139518_07]

2017 Golden Slipper winner She Will Reign is going to attract plenty of attention with the betting public, but does it represent value at $4.20? We’re leaning no because it has drawn wide in barrier 11 and some Slipper runners have needed the run to find their best fitness. Carrying only 50kg is a big service however, so consider at the price.

Russian Revolution is a classy four-year-old colt which is Everest bound. The Snowden-trained runner won the McEwen Stakes at this track last start when beating Heatherly and Houtzen with some style. The colt won’t have it easy from barrier 14, but it has been wide in harder races than this and still won. The $3.10 on offer is a respectable price.

Race 7 tip: Russian Revolution to win ($3.10) at CrownBet.com.au

Race 8 – Stutt Stakes (1600m)

Showtime has been well-supported to win after a solid run behind Royal Symphony last start. The Hawkes-trained colt won by over four lengths prior to that run at Wyong, but there are some nice types in this so it won’t find it any easier. The $3.10 is a touch short for our liking.

The value is with Wassergeist which is looking for more distance and gets it here. The potential Derby type won well at Sandown last start over 1400m and it has always indicated that the mile would be ideal. It’s bred to win at this level and it could give them something to chase in the straight. Hugh Bowman rides which is a positive and the double figure odds are appealing.

Race 8 tip: Wassergeist to win ($11) at CrownBet.com.au
