What Grafton Races
Where Grafton Racecourse – 284 Powell St, Grafton NSW 2460
When Sunday, July 9, 2023
First Race 12:15pm AEST

Country racing heads to Grafton Racecourse on Sunday afternoon with $80,000 in prize money and Big Dance eligibility up for grabs in the South Grafton Cup (1600m). The feature event is supported by a competitive eight-race program, and with a favourable weather forecast across the weekend, we should be racing on a Good 4 surface with the rail out +3m the entire circuit. The first race will get underway at 12:15pm AEST.

South Grafton Cup Top Tip: Cepheus

Cepheus will be seeking Big Dance Eligibility in the feature event and despite carrying the hefty 62kg, we think he’s up to the task. This son of Sea The Stars comes out of some quality form-lines this preparation, with his latest performance finishing second less than a length behind Irish Songs in the Glasshouse Handicap on July 1. Getting back to the 1600m looks ideal for this well-raced six-year-old and with a lack of tempo on paper, it wouldn’t surprise if jockey Aaron Bullock takes luck out of the equation electing to lead. If Cepheus is at his best, the $6 available with online bookmakers is a terrific price.

Grafton Best Bet Of The Day: Tanglewood

Tanglewood resumed from a 144-day spell at Taree on June 27 and couldn’t have been more impressive breaking his maiden status. He had raced in town before heading to the country circuit to produce his win, proving way too good for his rivals, justifying his extremely short $1.10 quote in the process. He steps into Class 1 company on Sunday and shouldn’t have any issues dealing with his opposition again – this time at a much more backable price with online betting sites. Aaron Bullock takes the mount seeking back-to-back wins and from the perfect draw (4) and Tanglewood looks to be a clear best bet at Grafton.

Next Best Bet: Highness

The first leg of the quaddie is a staying contest over 2200m and we’re confident Highness can take a big step forward from his Australian debut. He’s a French import who didn’t beat a runner home at Gosford on June 26 and was never in contention throughout the 1600m contest. However, he’s sired by Galileo and was always going to struggle keeping up with the sharper journey. This time, we’re expecting Aaron Bullock to give Highness a rev up from barrier one to sit much closer in transit compared to his first-up assignment. One thing’s for sure, Highness will stay the trip while a few of these may be labouring turning for home.
