The Big Dance is a new race created by Racing NSW, set to be run over 1600m at Randwick Racecourse on the first Tuesday in November each year.
The Big Dance is set to be Racing NSW’s answer to the Melbourne Cup on the first Tuesday in November, with the race restricted to eligible Country Cup horses.
The field for The Big Dance will be drawn from the winners and second-placed horses of 25 Country Cup races from across NSW.
A Big Dance Wild Card race will also be run at Royal Randwick in early October each year, with the winner and second-placed horse from the Wild Card becoming eligible for The Big Dance and exempt from the ballot.
Benchmark rating at the time of final acceptances will then be used to determine the final field from the pool of eligible horses, with the winners of eligible Country Cups receiving preference over any second placegetters.
Below we will highlight The Big Dance betting, Big Dance odds, form, field, past winners, jockey and trainer statistics.

Recent The Big Dance winners
- The Ciaron Maher-trained Gringotts ($5) has come with a withering burst to claim the Big Dance (1600m) at Randwick on Tuesday, courtesy of an expert steer from star hoop Tommy Berry. The son of Per Incanto lobbed into the perfect stalking position throughout the 1600m journey, with Berry electing to take all luck out of the equation from gate 19. He sent the five-year-old gelding forward from the outset, getting on the back of Zouatica drawn to his inside ($101.00), as Molly Bourke crossed to the lead aboard the rank outsider. It gave Gringotts the perfect cart into the race as they turned for home, with the likes of race favourite Tavi Time ($3.60) giving chase in the final 400m. Vivy Air ($26.00) and Superazi ($14.00) were putting in the big strides late at massive odds with horse racing bookmakers, but it was to no avail, as Gringotts surged away from his rivals to claim the $3 million feature.
- In a thrilling display of stamina and determination, Attractable, trained by Sara Ryan, emerged victorious at Royal Randwick, clinching the second edition of the prestigious $3 million The Big Dance over the mile. The Coffs Harbour Cup winner showcased remarkable resilience under the perfectly-timed ride by Regan Bayliss. Facing a formidable field of Twenty Country Cups winners on Melbourne Cup Day, the five-year-old I Am Invincible gelding demonstrated his prowess with a notable performance. This triumph came as Attractable’s second outing, following a commendable close fourth in Rosehill’s $1.5 million Alan Brown Stakes (1400m), where he finished just 1.16 lengths behind the winner as a 50/1 outsider. Maintaining a state of freshness, Attractable displayed unwavering strength, securing victory by a length in The Big Dance.
- Rustic Steel turned his recent form around to take out the inaugural running of the $2 million Big Dance (1600m) at Royal Randwick on Melbourne Cup Day for Newcastle’s premier trainer, Kris Lees. Rustic Steel finished off his autumn campaign with a win in The Coast (1600m) at Gosford (1600m) before heading to Scone on May 13 to take out the Listed Darley Scone Cup (1600m), which qualified him for The Big Dance, but has failed to feature in his three starts this preparation. Lees admitted himself during the week that Rustic Steel was his ‘No.1 seed’ of his four runners in the Big Dance, but his form had tapered in recent runs. Claiming the lead at the 150m from the tiring Surf Dancer, Rustic Steel who jumped at $12 odds, had the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained Cisco Bay ($9.50) breathing down his neck in the closing stages, but the five-year-old Deep Field gelding continued to find, holding off the recent winner of the Big Dance Wild Card for the half-head victory.
