The Golden Pendant is a Group 2 race held at Rosehill racecourse, on Golden Rose Day, for fillies and mares aged three-years-old and older, run under set weights and penalty conditions.
Since the inaugural running in 1996, the Golden Pendant has been run exclusively at Rosehill, while the race was run over 1200m until 2011, but has been run over 1400m from 2012 onwards.
The Golden Pendant was originally classified as a Listed race, before being upgraded to Group 3 level from 2001 until 2014. From 2015 the Golden Pendant has been run as a Group 2 race.
Mares have chosen to use the Golden Pendant as a key lead up race for the Angst Stakes or Epsom Handicap over 1600m; however, in recent times they have pushed onto The Invitation over 1400m, four weeks later.
Notable winners of the Golden Pendant include Nimalee (2022), Vangelic (2021), Subpoenaed (2020), Mizzy (2019), Daysee Doom (2017), Tycoon Tara (2016), More Joyous (2012), Hot Danish (2009) and Spinning Hill (2000).

Recent Golden Pendant results
- Team Hawkes and Zac Lloyd combined to claim the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill, with Makarena ($4.60) holding off the fast-finishing Amelia’s Jewel ($2.70) to score an impressive second-up victory. The daughter of Snitzel put the writing on the wall first-up in the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) on September 14, being forced to cart up a talented list of fillies and mares before fading to finish 2.4 lengths away. Lloyd was happy to adopt similar tactics, this time electing to sit outside the leader as Makarena and Tropical Quall ($10.00) pressed forward to go along at a steady tempo throughout the 1400m journey. Amelia’s Jewel had no excuses lobbing into the one-one, while Semana ($3.00) shocked most punters by being dragged back towards the rear of the field under Dylan Gibbons. The race turned into a sit-and-sprint as Makarena made the first move turning for home, kicking off the bend to maintain an unassailable margin as only Amelia’s Jewel and Arctic Glamour ($9.50) made any significant inroads in the concluding stages.
- Chris Waller has managed to train the quinella of the Group 2 Golden Pendant (1400m) at Rosehill as Espiona saluted as a $2.30 favourite. Having chased home the Annabel Neasham-trained Sunshine In Paris in the Group 2 Sheraco Stakes (1200m) when finishing second beaten under a length, the Extreme Choice mare went one better in the $400,000 Group 2 event at Rosehill. Saturday’s win was Espiona’s second win at Rosehill, having claimed the Group 1 Coolmore Classic (1500m) during the autumn. Diamond Dealer ($21.00) had a majority of her rivals chasing a long way out, but Espiona was clearly travelling the best on the home turn as Nash Rawiller peeled the mare off heels to put up an impressive margin on her fast-finishing stablemate Atishu ($5.00) in second and last start Tibbie Stakes (1400m) winner Banana Queen ($6.50) in third. It was all honours the winner though, as Espiona took her record to six wins from 15 starts, and three minor placings.
- In a thrilling finish to the 2022 edition of the Golden Pendant, the Matthew Smith-trained Nimalee ($8.50) has held off the challenge of Palaisipan ($10) to claim the Group 2 contest. After the speedy Expat ($17) led the field up, Nimalee took over with 300m to go and seemed to have the race within her keeping. However, within a few strides Palaisipan levelled up with her and they battled it out down the remainder of straight. One of the roughest runners in the race, Pippali ($81) boxed on well to finish third behind the leading duo.
- Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott have claimed their second Golden Pendant victory in four years, after Vangelic ($7) lead all the way at Rosehill. Tim Clark made sure that he used barrier one to his advantage and he pushed his four-year-old mare out of the gates to hold out Nimalee ($8.50). As the field rounded the home turn, the winner appeared destined to come from the top two, as they kicked clear to fight out the finish. The race favourite Entriviere ($2.90) was the best off the swoopers and she finished third – half a length off Nimalee in second.
- Chris Waller has claimed his first ever Golden Pendant success with Subpoenaed ($5), who was given a great ride by Tommy Berry to take out the Group 2 contest. The race favourite, Haut Brion Her ($2.25) set up a hot tempo which suited the swoopers like Subpoenaed. There was never any real challenger to the winner, as Emeralds ($15) and Jen Rules ($21) nabbed second and third from a wall of four or five runners.
- After being challenged for the lead early, Mizzy ($5.50) and Tommy Berry eventually found the lead and never looked back, on their way to claiming the 2019 Group 2 Golden Pendant at Rosehill. Fundamentalist ($17) – who challenged Mizzy for the lead – couldn’t go with the winner at the top of the home straight. Champagne Cuddles ($4.20) and Dyslexic ($7) chased hard, but they never got close to the winner – finishing over a length off Mizzy.
