2020 Gold Edition Plate betting preview

This year’s Listed Gold Edition Plate for the three-year-olds over 1200m at Saturday’s Doomben meeting is nothing less than a cracker. In what has been identified by the market as a race in two headed by Isotope and Away Game, it is a wide-open affair for third place. The speed will be hot, set by the likes of Away Game, Apache Chase, Isotope and Lady Banff.

We believe the market has it right, with Isotope a deserving favourite over last year’s Magic Millions Classic winner, Away Game. Isotope absolutely bolted in here last start, winning in a canter in the Mode Stakes against the fillies, and she looks hard to beat again. She’s been too good in both starts on rain-affected going, so she should get through the wet, and she has drawn ideally in six to get a cart into the race. She has race fitness on her side and should be too slick.

Away Game is the clear danger, but she is first up since her fifth against the older mares in the Group 1 Sangster Stakes in Adelaide in May. She had some problems that caused her to miss the Spring Carnival and is now here off one nice trial. She has drawn wide in gate 10 but should show enough toe to get up outside the leader. She had a big campaign as a two-year-old and was well travelled, so hopefully she isn’t busted heading into her first three-year-old campaign.

Thunder Mania is a horse we have a fair opinion of, and of the outsiders in this field, he looks the one that can run a place. He rattled home here last start to grab third when first up following his good run in the J.J. Atkins behind Rothfire. The son of Snitzel has won twice over six furlongs, never missed the place at Doomben and is a winner on soft going, so he gets some big ticks. The draw in barrier 12 will see him get back under Ron Stewart, but the speed in the race will give him a chance to charge home late for third.

Fleet Dove from the Kelly Schweida stable is also a ridiculous price at $61 and has some great form on heavy going, including a victory over Kisukano at this track and distance in the winter.
