2020 George Moore Stakes betting preview

The feature of the afternoon at Doomben this Saturday is the Group 3 George Moore Stakes over 1200m. A cracking field of 13 is headed by impressive last-start winner Jonker, with the likes of Hard Empire, Usmanov, The Odyssey, Deep Image and Tambo’s Mate also well in the market. There will be no shortage of pace here, with speed across the park from The Odyssey, Jonker, Spurcraft, Deep Image and Mishani Hustler.

After his ripping third when first up at the Sunshine Coast in the Swiss Ace Plate, we’ve found it hard to go past Tambo’s Mate in this. Despite drawing the outside alley, there looks enough speed to allow Matt McGillivray to cross under heels and land in a gun run or, at worst, be three wide with cover. Up to 1200m and second up are both huge ticks for the five-year-old son of Mossman given he has won five times over the six-furlong trip, including a Group 3 win in the BRC Sprint at Doomben over the Winter Carnival against similar opposition. He is as honest as the day is long, and he should be right in this at a huge price with even luck from the carpark gate.

Jonker couldn’t have been more impressive if he tried when winning the Keith Noud Plate in his Queensland debut three weeks ago by 4.5 lengths in a canter. He got a soft time of it down on the minimum weight, but with more pressure on paper here and up in weight, we think he might find it a bit tougher. He hadn’t won for over 1,000 days, so we have to consider two different sides with him. Either he is just a non-winner and that was a fluke, or he has finally sorted out his racing manners and is ready to be a racehorse. If Tony Gollan has worked him out and the money comes for him on race day, he’ll be the one they have to beat again, but we are happy to bet around him.

Outback Barbie rarely puts in a bad run and only narrowly missed in this race last year, so we are happy to include her in the numbers at an each-way quote. She is a three-time winner when fresh and does her best racing at Doomben, so she has to be respected. The draw out in barrier 11 is no issue, as she will naturally get back anyway. In fact, it could work in her favour, as Michael Rodd will be able to keep the mare out of any trouble and conserve her for one final sprint. Her best is good enough to win this.
