Doomben racing preview

Nine ripping races have been assembled for George Moore Stakes Day at Doomben. With hot and dry conditions around Brisbane, the track will start in the Good 4 range, while the rail will be out just the +1m for the entirety of the course. Race 1 will jump at 12:18pm local time.

Best BetRace 4 – Paniagua (#3) $2.80 with Sportsbet

The Prince of the North, Paniagua, looks to have a stranglehold on this year’s Country Cup Challenge Final. A winner of seven straight races, the four-year-old gelding will be looking to add an eighth picket to his fence in the $100,000 country feature. His win in the Cairns Cup back in August was superb, and he returned in just as good fashion when winning over 1400m first up two weeks ago. He is undefeated at 1600m from two attempts at the journey and drops 1kg off his last-start win. Barrier four is ideal for the son of Tycoon Ruler, and Robert Thompson will jump in the saddle for the first time. Paniagua should be lengths too good for some of these older bush horses.

Next BestRace 6 – So You Win (#3) $2.70 with Sportsbet

Chris Waller will leg up Luke Dittman once again on So You Win after a brave second to Ballistic Boy in the Mooloolaba Cup a fortnight ago. That pair raced away from the third placegetter, which suggests they are both horses to follow. So You Win was back in distance on that occasion, since he won well over the 2000m journey here three weeks earlier. Back up to 2000m will suit the son of So You Think, as will the cushy draw in gate two. He does rise 2kg in this, but he isn’t up against Ballistic Boy. Expect him to be right in the finish.

Best ValueRace 5 – Thunder Mania (#6) $16 with Sportsbet

One of the races of the afternoon is the Winning Rupert Plate for three-year-old colts and geldings over 1200m. While the market has it down to a race in two, we think there is great value with John Symons and Sheila Laxon’s runner, Thunder Mania. The son of Snitzel is a winner of three from five, including two first-up wins over 1200m. He finished four lengths off Rothfire in the JJ Atkins at the end of last campaign and has trialled well leading into this. That JJ Atkins form looks far superior given he beat home the likes of Wild Ruler, Macroura and Isotope, who is one of the better bets of the day in the final race. Drawn low in barrier three under Ron Stewart, he’ll look to sit off the hot pace and unleash down the centre of the track. If he gets the breaks, we have no doubt that he can win this.
