Geelong Racecourse is scheduled to host a nine-race card on Wednesday afternoon for Geelong Cup Day, and HorseBetting’s Victorian horse racing analyst presents his best bets and quaddie numbers with odds from Australia’s leading online bookmakers. The track is rated a Good 4, the rail is in the true position, and racing will get underway at 12:30pm AEDT.
Geelong Cup Top Tip – Hasta La War
The Group 3 Geelong Cup over 2400m is the feature event on Wednesday’s card, and we anticipate the Sue Murphy-trained Hasta La War to build on his effort in the Herbert Power Stakes. Having been defeated by two lengths in an eye-catching run into third to Delphi in that race, the six-year-old son of Declaration Of War has been racing in good enough form to take this out. He is armed with a nice turn of foot and with Linda Meech sticking on board, he should be aided with a nice steer en route to a run in the Melbourne Cup with a bit of luck. Considered to be one of the backmarkers here, he should be able to follow the likes of Tralee Rose into the race and ultimately prove too hard to hold out.
Geelong Best Bet – Character
The Listed Geelong Classic has become a strong form reference for the VRC Derby, and we expect the James Cummings-trained Character to find himself back in the winner’s stall. Having chased home the likes of Gunstock and El Patroness in the Listed Super Impose Stakes at Flemington on October 2, he looks well-placed to take out the Geelong Classic. With those two horses running the quinella in Saturday’s Caulfield Classic, it looks to be the strongest form reference heading into this. From barrier six, Fred Kersley will look to have the Teofilo colt in the one-one, where he should gain the run of the race. With a run like that and a nice staying ability, he should prove too good here.
Next Best Bet at Geelong – Grey Khan
We will be hoping to kick-start Geelong Cup Day on a winning note when track-and-distance specialist Grey Khan steps out over 2400m. With two wins and a narrow defeat to his name from three starts at the Geelong 2400m, he is set to relish his role as he steps up to a BM70. Regular jockey Tianni Chapman hops on board and claims 3kg, getting the son of Dalakhani in with 59kg, which will aid his cause as he will roll forward and look to make this a genuine staying effort. He looks to gain an uncontested lead throughout and if he is at his best, we expect him to salute at a nice price.
Best Value at Geelong – Part Time Lover
The Mathew Ellerton & Simon Zahra-trained Part Time Lover is set to step out over 1400m and having gone down narrowly at Sale on October 6, she looks to be a good bet here. The six-year-old Zoustar mare was beaten a nose by Saltpeter at Sale, with that horse since coming out and winning its next start at Caulfield on Saturday, suggesting that is the form to follow. From barrier 12, Damian Lane will look to take her to the second half of the field and with a well-timed run, we expect to see Part Time Lover fighting out the finish.
