Full form & tips for Ashburton, Friday December 22

THE lone meeting across the Tasman takes place at Ashburton as the Kiwis put on a seven event card.

It always makes the Aussie mornings and early afternoons drift by faster when our NZ friends host racing, so we are looking forward to making our investments ahead of the Ashburton card.

Race 1 – Maiden (2100m)

Shangold looks to be the best horse in a weak field. The only query here is the step up in journey, but it has a distinct class advantage on all these runners and will be the one to beat providing it sees out the trip/

Race 1 tip: Shangold to win ($2.20 at Ladbrokes)

Race 2 – Maiden (1400m)

In a huge field Jin Lu looks to be the best betting option. On debut the horse closed smartly to finish third in a 13 horse field on December 8. Will be hard in a big field but the form is hard to ignore for a maiden.

Race 2 tip: Jin Lu to win ($4.20 at Crownbet)

Race 3 – Handicap (1400m)

A five horse field is set to take the track here and Riding Shotgun looks to be the best bet here. The toppy won well on December 8, but rises sharply in the weights. The horse will only get beaten if it cannot lug the weight, and we’re anticipating it does it easily.

Riding Shotgun is the best bet of the day at Ashburton

Race 3 tip: Riding Shotgun to win ($2.20 at Ladbrokes)

Race 4 – Benchmark 65 (1400m)

Ruby Row is one of the only horses here that has won at Ashburton, which is a huge tick for the daughter of Battle Paint. In its last two races the horse has placed and finished fourth. We are expecting Ruby Row to add a fourth win to its career tally.

Ruby Row is our next best bet of the day at Ashburton

Race 4 tip: Ruby Row to win ($6 at Neds)

Race 5 – Maiden (1200m)

Anzac Coup looks best suited here. The market is the guide going into this one given the huge field and we are backing the favourite in.

Race 5 tip: Anzac Cup to win ($3.50 at CrownBet)

Race 6 – Benchmark 75 (1200m)

Fully Charged is a northern raider that looms as the potential winner here. While the horse hasn’t won first-up in its career, it has recorded a win at benchmark 65 level in the past and is rock bottom in the weights.

Race 6 tip: Fully Charged to win ($4 at CrownBet)

Race 7 – Benchmark 65 (2100m)

Taxihome may not have won at the Ashburton track at two previous attempts but the last-start second suggests it is not far off winning. In a field that has no real standouts we are backing the in-form Alysha Collett to guide us home in the last.

Race 7 tip: Taxihome to win ($7.50 at Sportsbet)
