It’s every racing fans favourite day of the year on Saturday, it’s Derby Day! A blockbuster nine race card of pure black-type racing awaits us on Saturday in a card chock full of talent. The VRC Derby is the feature event with the country’s best 3YO Colts and Geldings set to do battle over 2500 metres. Alongside the Derby are events such as the Coolmore Stud Stakes and the Kennedy Cantala Stakes, whilst the remainder of the card is littered with several other Group and Listed races.

When Phillip Stokes and Jamie Kah combine they have a 41% winning strike rate and we’re backing that combination to get the job done in the Linlithgow Stakes with this South Australian 5YO gelding. He maps to settle midfield in the running and with a genuine tempo expected, we can expect him to be charging home late down the straight as he did earlier in the year when scoring over 1000 metres here in the winter. He seemingly has a bit of class on side considering he ran within half a length to Dirty Work and Diamond Effort last start, and both of those gallopers would be odds-on in a race like this.

We’re more than happy to take on the favourite in the opening event on Derby Day as we side with his stablemate. He has two and a half lengths to make up on Aysar from their start in the Caulfield Guineas, but Aysar had the favours in the running whilst Crosshaven was left luckless sitting wide with no cover up on speed. He maps to get an easy time of it up in front this time around. If we can be completely forgiving of that run in the Guineas, his form prior showed that he should have no issues in seeing out the 1600 metres at his second attempt.

This 4YO mare’s last start third was the first time she had finished outside of the quinella since back in May this year and she was only beaten by half a length in a slowly run race. The way Williams rode her sparked plenty of controversy considering she doesn’t have an electric turn of foot. If she can get her own way up in front and Williams can let her stride with a bit more freedom, there is no reason where she can not take out the Empire Rose on Saturday.
