What Flemington Races
Where Flemington Racecourse – 448 Epsom Rd, Flemington VIC 3031
When Saturday, July 15, 2023
First Race 12pm AEST

Winter racing at Flemington continues on Saturday afternoon with nine races set down for decision. Perfect conditions are expected in the lead-up, and the track has come up a Good 4 at the time of acceptances. Despite brief showers forecast, we anticipate a near-perfect deck. The rail comes out 3m the entire circuit, with racing kicking off at 12pm AEST.

Best Bet at Flemington – Mostly Cloudy

Mostly Cloudy was a good thing licked at Rosehill on July 1 when held up for a run at a crucial point before flashing late to be beaten just over a length. The four-year-old didn’t see clear air until the final 100m and exploded late over the 2400m in a run which screamed out “back me next time”. The former European is already a three-time winner at the 2800m and everything he has done since debuting in Australia suggests he will eat up every bit of the trip on Saturday. Outside of last-start winner Mimi’s Award, there doesn’t look like much that Mostly Cloudy has to beat in the Flemington Cup.

Best Bet

Race 6 – Silk#8 Mostly Cloudy (10)

4yo Gelding | T: Trent Busuttin & Natalie Young | J: Jye McNeil (54kg)

Next Best at Flemington – Pitchanun

Pitchanun has been in fine form over her past three starts. Formerly a non-winner, the mare strung together wins at Geelong and Sandown before being lipped out in a photo finish at Sandown on June 10. She is clearly relishing the 1600m with three wins and four seconds to her name from 10 goes. Celine Gaudray will ensure her mount gains every advantage in running from barrier four, and with just 56.5kg on her back, Pitchanun should prove too hard to hold out.

Next Best

Race 3 – Silk#2 Pitchanun (4)

5yo Mare | T: Danny O’Brien | J: Celine Gaudray (a2) (58.5kg)

Best Value at Flemington – Crown Crusher

The Lee & Shannon Hope-trained Crown Crusher continues to get too far back in running but keeps hitting the line strongly to suggest he is close to winning a race like this. Stepping up to the 1700m for the first time looks ideal for the son of Gold Standard, and he should appreciate getting around Flemington for the first time. Wiremu Pinn hops on board claiming 2kg, getting Crown Crusher in with just 52.5kg on his back. With the light weight and a perfect Flemington surface, it all adds up to a forward showing from Crown Crusher.

Best Value

Race 2 – Silk#8 Crown Crusher (6)

3yo Gelding | T: Lee & Shannon Hope | J: Wiremu Pinn (a2) (54.5kg)
