First Race 1pm AEST

The traditional ANZAC Day meeting at Flemington greets punters on Tuesday afternoon, with the Listed VRC St Leger and Listed ANZAC Day Stakes headlining proceedings. With an unseasonably warm forecast for Melbourne throughout the week, perfect conditions are expected on a track rated a Good 4, with the rail returning to the true position for the entire circuit. ANZAC Day racing commences at 1pm AEST.

VRC St Leger Top Tip: Nightsun

This year’s VRC St Leger is essentially a glorified BM64, with the top-rated horse, Midnight Glow, just a 66-rater in the 2800m event worth $300,000. Most of these come out of the Listed Galilee Series Final, and we expect the Robbie Griffiths & Mathew de Kock-trained Nightsun to bounce back from a poor showing. The three-year-old gelding was ridden in a more prominent role than usual and didn’t show much when asked for an effort. His run the start prior was much more promising and a repeat of that will have him right in the finish in a field like this. He looks like a dour, old-fashioned stayer, and if Nightsun can see out the 2800m, there is no reason why he can’t win.

ANZAC Day Stakes Top Tip: Mistavain

The Gavin Bedggood-trained Mistavain did more than enough on debut in The Showdown to suggest he is capable of a forward showing in Tuesday’s ANZAC Day Stakes. The two-year-old finished on the heels of Treasurway, who he meets again in this, but is almost double the price of his rival. There is no She’sallshenanigans in this race, and if Brian Higgins can get a cart across from barrier 10 and land in the one-one, then Mistavain looks to present great value in the first of two Listed races on the card.

Best Bet at Flemington: White Marlin

Punters get a bit of a treat on Tuesday with Melbourne Cup favourite White Marlin stepping out over 2000m. He is clearly the class horse in the field and showed all of it in his strong first-up win in the Group 3 Easter Cup at Sandown on April 8. He put 2.25 lengths on Right You Are and subsequently beat Group performer Lunar Flare in the process. He is undefeated through six starts, and despite stepping back 100m to the 2000m, that will be no issue for this son of Mastercraftsman who should simply jump, lead and win under Jordan Childs to get the quaddie off to a popular start.

Next Best at Flemington: Gunstock

In the third leg of the quaddie, Group 3 Coongy Cup winner Gunstock will be looking to return in style. The son of Tavistock generally fires fresh with a win and a second to his name when first-up from a spell. He is clearly the class horse of the race, and despite no doubt being better on rain-affected ground, Gunstock will appreciate a genuinely run 1700m fresh and should be too strong late.

4yo Gelding | T: Mick Price & Michael Kent (Jnr) | J: Ben Melham (57kg)

Best Value at Flemington: Zion

We will be looking to strike some value early on Tuesday as the Nick Ryan-trained Zion looks to build on his recent good form. The five-year-old gelding has not missed the top four in his last six runs, which include two wins and three minor placings. The son of Rubick is yet to miss the top three in three runs down the Flemington straight, including earlier in the campaign when chasing home Senegalia. He was strong on Heavy going at Stawell last time out, and with just 55.5kg on his back here, if Dean Yendall can have him stalking the speed and letting down nicely, Zion can cause a bit of an upset at the double-figure quote with online bookmakers.
