Doomben tips for April 24

What Doomben Races
Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007
When Saturday, April 24, 2021
First Race 11:32am AEST

Doomben’s nine-race card will give punters a first sniff of the Queensland Winter Carnival with three Listed races on Saturday. The track is rated a Soft 6 and the rail is out 4.5m for the entirety of the course. HorseBetting.com.au brings you our in-depth analysis of every race at Doomben on Saturday, as well as quaddie numbers for the meeting. The action kicks off at 11:32am with a 1200m 2YO Handicap.

Race 1 – QTIS 2YO Handicap (1200m)

We see 13 babies go toe-to-toe in the opener on Saturday and it presents as a chance to start the day off well. Matt Dunn’s Subterranean showed he had the class when winning a similar race to this over the Summer, before placing third in the Group 3 BJ McLachlan Stakes behind Alpine Edge. He resumed at Randwick on April 10 to finish fifth behind some handy two-year-olds, and we expect that form to stack up in this.

Selections: 1-12-6-5

Race 2 – Benchmark 90 Handicap (2200m)

These are pretty well the same horses that contest these staying races week-in week-out and they take turns winning. It is a race we are not keen to bet into at all, but for arguments sake, Unbiased can be winning at the double figure quote now that he gets to a suitable distance. He was given none under Adin Thompson last Saturday, so the fact that the stable has turned him around quickly suggests he came through it unfazed.

Selections: 5-6-1-3

Race 3 – Benchmark 75 (1630m)

Desleigh Forster and Mark Du Plessis combine in the third with last start winner Racing Paradise. The son of Savabeel will be lining up in his fourth run in April, but he has been getting better each time out, so we are happy to back him here at the $6 quote (available at Sportsbet). He drops 1.5kg from his win on April 14 at Eagle Farm over the mile, and only rises from a Benchmark 68 to a BM75 here. He should be able to cross and lead from barrier nine and take some running down. Hallowed Girl should appreciate the decent tempo under Larry Cassidy.

Selections: 9-8-4-1

Race 4 – No Metro Wins Handicap (1200m)

Flying Crackerjack toughed out a brutally run 1300m feature sprint at Rockhampton last start, to just miss the rich spoils to Natural Emperor who has won three of eight starts. Tom Button’s gelding should appreciate the tempo here over 1200m as he should be able to get a spot two back on the outside under Du Plessis. This is an easier race than last time which should be enough to see him in the winner’s stall.

Selections: 5-4-2-11

Race 5 – Listed Tails Quality (1630m)

The first of the three Listed races sees a field of 11 go around. Race favourite, Walking Flying is exactly that at the moment, as she shoots for three straight wins and looks hard to beat. In saying that, one that represents value is Cellarmaid from the Schweida yard. The four-year-old mare had a long time between runs, but resumed with a very good midfield effort over 1350m at Doomben on a Soft 5. Her efforts this time last year saw her run second at Group 2 level to Vanna Girl which is good form for this. There will be a bit of speed here which will suit as she will get back and be finishing strongly under Taylor Marshall.

Selections: 10-7-3-6

Race 6 – Listed Princess Stakes (1630m)

The three-year-old fillies have their first key lead up to the Queensland Oaks on Saturday in the Princess Stakes. Tycoon Evie has been brilliant winning three straight up against some tougher opposition. The Written Tycoon filly won over 1400m and 1600m in February, before having a freshen up and winning by 1.75 lengths over 1200m on April 3. That run should have brought her on enough to be ready to go at the mile again. Good Soize resumes for the Gollan stable and she presents as the danger and the main Oaks filly at this stage in our books.

Selections: 1-2-4-7

Race 7 – Benchmark 90 (1110m)

The Steven O’Dea and Matthew Hoysted trained gelding, Gee Tee Tee resumes on Saturday, and he finds a suitable race to kick off in. The son of Written Tycoon has won four of 11 starts and placed in a further four, so he has a will to win that is needed this time of year. Drawn barrier six under Ben Thompson, he should be in a pretty handy spot just stalking the speed. Maozi trialled really nicely on April 13, so we would not be surprised to see her fire first-up either.

Selections: 12-9-10-4

Race 8 – Listed Mick Dittman Plate (1110m)

Listed racing resumes in the penultimate for the three-year-olds and it is shaping to be another cracking contest. Rex Lipp’s Simply Fly is flying at the minute, with his last start runner-up effort the first loss in six straight starts. The Spirit Of Boom gelding won the 3YO QTIS Jewel at the Gold Coast two starts ago and then got too far back under the big weight when stepping back from 1200m to 1050m last time to only go down a long neck. Back up to 1110m and down 3.5kg to 57kg, he should take some serious beating from the inside alley under Steph Thornton. Godolphin colt Andermatt presents as a real threat however and he has the blinkers on for the first time which will suit him.

Selections: 1-4-8-14

Race 9 – Benchmark 85 (1350m)

The saying ‘save the best until last’ is as true as they come here. David Vandyke’s five-year-old gelding Skins is shooting for his fifth career win at just start seven, and after his first-up romping, we cannot see how he loses in this. The son of Sepoy will be nominated for the Stradbroke Handicap according to his astute trainer, which should not be taken lightly given how well Vandyke places his horses and considering he was going to boycott racing his horses at Eagle Farm. Skins has drawn the inside alley under Ryan Maloney which will give him a beautiful run on the inside of horses and be able to ease of heels in the straight. He has won twice at Doomben and placed on two other occasions which adds further credentials.

Selections: 15-14-10-8
