HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for Doomben’s nine-race card this Saturday, along with odds from Australia’s top bookmakers. The track is currently rated a Soft 5 and the rail is out 2.5m for the entire course. A field of 10 two-year-olds will kick off the meeting, with race one set to go around at 12:08pm AEST.

Best Bet at Doomben – Axe

Michael Costa’s Axe drops back to 1200m in Open company on Saturday after running a very game eighth in the Magic Millions Cup on January 15. On that occasion, the five-year-old gelding settled close in the run and stuck on to the task, finishing 2.5 lengths away from the likes of Eleven Eleven, Holyfield and Apache Chase. First-up this prep he was caught wide at the Gold Coast, before going to Doomben on New Year’s Day and catching a Heavy 10 track that he did not enjoy one bit, running behind Kementari. In his most recent start he beat home Oscar Zulu, who has since run second in the Listed Sunshine Coast Cup, while he also finished three-tenths of a length behind Beau Rossa, who has a Group 1 placing behind Behemoth. Now fourth-up, back to his favoured 1200m and on to a drier Doomben surface, he is going to take plenty of beating. While barrier six in the seven-horse field is a bit sticky, he is going to end up being one-out, one-back under Boris Thornton and should be able to put this field away. This price is absurd.

Next Best at Doomben – Grace Bay

Hawkesbury trainer Claire Lever sends two runners to Doomben on Saturday: Diva Bella in race nine, and Grace Bay in race six. While they have both been well-placed in their respective races, Grace Bay looks incredibly hard to beat in a Fillies & Mares No Metro Wins Handicap over 1110m. The mare by Per Incanto is unbeaten in three starts over this distance and is going to relish a little bit of sting out of the ground considering she has won twice from four starts on Soft tracks. The five-year-old finished her spring campaign off by running five lengths behind the winner in the $700,000 Four Pillars at Rosehill, which is certainly good enough form for a race like this. She worked home quite well at Canterbury on December 17 in a race where the leader dictated, before running gamely at Warwick Farm on January 5 behind Quatenus with 58kg. Cejay Graham will do the riding, so her 3kg claim sees Grace Bay in with just 52kg. From barrier nine, Graham will have a few options, but she is likely to settle down midfield with cover and be able to finish off strongly. Back to 1100m off a month-long freshen should see her right in the finish.

Best Value at Doomben – Logomania

We were a little bit taken by Logomania’s maiden victory at Ipswich on December 29 when caught wide throughout but still proving too good. The three-year-old has only improved since then, despite not winning in his two subsequent starts. In his maiden win he didn’t beat a great deal of quality, but he did it the hard way, proving that he was a fair bit better than his rivals. Trainer Bryan Dais then took the gelding to a very competitive Class 4 at the Gold Coast over the Magic Millions Carnival where he finished seventh behind The Ritz and Palladas as a $41 outsider. The son of Eurozone has had one run since then, coming third at this track over 1200m behind Alf’s Magic and Pentito in a very similar race. Mark Du Plessis has ridden the gelding in all five career starts, so the fact that he has decided to stick with him again gives us confidence, while Logomania also meets Pentito 0.5kg better at the weights, which will aid his chances of turning the tables over 1350m. Where he gets to in the run from barrier 12 is a bit of an unknown, but there does look to be enough speed in the race to hopefully string out the field a bit and allow Du Plessis to slot in somewhere in the first half. Logomania may just be chasing an easier race given he is eligible for a Class 1, but we are confident he is up to it.
