Doomben preview

What Doomben Races
Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007
When Saturday, August 20, 2022
First Race 11:38am AEST

Nine races will be run and won at Doomben on Saturday, and while there are no features, some good events are programmed. HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst presents you with his best bets and quaddie numbers for the meeting, which is scheduled to get underway at 11:38am AEST. The surface is rated a Soft 5 at the moment, while the rail will be set 2m out for the entire course.

Best Bet at Doomben – Merimee

We are going to turn a bit of a blind eye to the fact that Merimee has to jump from barrier 17, because we are confident she is going super and will win this. Trained by Chris Waller and to be ridden by James Orman, this four-year-old by Winning Rupert has superior form to that of her rivals. In March, she ran a terrific second behind Gypsy Goddess over 1600m in her last run for the prep, before resuming with a fast-finishing second behind Hatchet at Doomben over 1200m. Hatchet came out and won his next start by three lengths, while Merimee went back to the trials and did everything you would have wanted to see if you were an owner. The elephant in the room is the carpark barrier, but she goes back anyway and we’ve seen her come from last to win at Doomben in the past, so it isn’t that big of a deal. She’s had a trial between runs, so the rise to 1600m second-up doesn’t concern us, and Orman knows her well.

Best Bet

Race 7 – Silk #13 Merimee (17)

Next Best at Doomben – Otyrar

Otyrar was good to us when winning at this track over 2060m last Wednesday, so we are going back to the well with him in the staying race of the day. While favourite and stablemate Za Ceibas will be hard to beat, there is plenty of merit in what Otyrar has been doing. The son of New Approach has had two starts in Queensland now, going down by a length to his talented stablemate Podium over 1600m before backing up seven days later over 2060m to win. He steps out to 2200m now, which will suit, and with horses like Stubai, Bump’n’run and Windermere in the race, there will be no shortage of speed, setting it up for Ben Thompson and Otyrar. The five-year-old gets in with 3.5kg less than what he carried in his last-start victory, so he looks dangerous.

Next Best

Race 4 – Silk #9 Otyrar (2)

Best Value at Doomben – Aussie Nugget

Tony Gollan and Angela Jones combine with Aussie Nugget in the first leg of the daily quaddie. The six-year-old hasn’t been in the winner’s circle for 80 weeks, with his last win coming back in January last year at Caulfield. The seven-year-old son of Dansili had his first start in Queensland over 1350m at this track on August 6, when he closed off well to run sixth. Gollan has the ability to turn these horses around, and we are backing him to do so with this one as he gets out to 1600m. Only four starts ago, Aussie Nugget finished fourth at Listed grade in Adelaide behind Regalo Di Gaetano, and if he can find some of that form, he will go close to winning this off-season Benchmark 80 Handicap. He only has to carry 56.5kg after Jones’ claim, so he gets in exceptionally well in a race like this.

Best Value

Race 6 – Silk #5 Aussie Nugget (14)

7yo Gelding | T: Tony Gollan | J: Angela Jones (a3)(59.5kg)
