Doomben plays host to Listed racing in Queensland on Saturday, with the Doomben Mile the feature event on what is a competitive nine-race program. HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie selections for the program, including a tip in the Listed feature. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, the rail is out just 1m for the entire course, and the first race is set to start at 11:48am AEST.

Doomben Mile Best Bet – Welsh Legend

Chris Waller sends Welsh Legend north to Queensland for the Listed event on Saturday, and although she is now a seven-year-old, she should be very hard to beat. The daughter of Camelot has been a model of consistency all throughout her career, winning four races and placing a further 14 times from 37 starts. Four starts ago she was a winner at Flemington over 1800m, and since then she’s been competitive in Listed races in New South Wales behind Skyman and Dr Drill. She is bound to get the glamour run from barrier three under Samantha Collett, and with only 52.5kg on her back, she should be able to sprint quickly in the concluding stages of the race. She’s one of the standouts at Doomben.

Best Bet at Doomben – Arentee

Arentee just went from strength-to-strength last preparation, breaking his maiden at Doomben in April, before winning a Class 3 at Eagle Farm and then only narrowly going down in the Listed Queensland Day Stakes behind Athelric, who returned with a runner-up performance to Eduardo in Saturday’s Concorde Stakes at Randwick. If that isn’t the right form for a Class 6 Handicap at Doomben, we aren’t sure what is. The Chris Meagher-trained four-year-old will have to overcome a sticky gate, but he’s shown throughout his career that he can still be competitive in races even with a tough run. His recent trial win was very good with Ben Thompson in the saddle, so we expect a forward showing on Saturday. If he’s taken this next step this preparation, it won’t be long before he’s back in some top races.

Next Best at Doomben – Birriecart

The Steven O’Dea & Matthew Hosyted-trained Birriecart looks set to return to the winner’s stall on Saturday, following his first defeat at his most recent start back in March when sixth behind Prince Of Boom in the $500,000 QTIS 3YO Jewel on the Gold Coast. The son of Husson was unbeaten from three starts prior, with all of those victories coming right here at this track and distance. He beat Open company horses in a barrier trial recently and looked terrific in doing so, so now back to Benchmark 72 company under race conditions, he looks hard to beat. Boris Thornton is the only jockey to ride this horse in a race or a trial, so his retention of the ride adds confidence, while barrier five looks sure to give this horse an economical run. There aren’t many horses in this race who worry us.

Best Value at Doomben – Bandipur

It has been a long time between drinks for Kelly Purdy’s eight-year-old Bandipur, but the race sets up nicely for him on Saturday. The son of Commands won the Listed Eye Liner Stakes in July 2020 at Ipswich, but that was only five starts ago due to a almost two years off the scene. He resumed first-up at Doomben on August 6 and ran fifth behind Snowzone and Garibaldi who was a subsequent Listed winner, before Purdy then took the $740,000 earner to Sydney for a crack at the Group 3 Show County where he was far from disgraced, running 2.2 lengths away in fourth behind Showmanship and Prime Candidate. Yes, he does have to lug 61kg, but he will be out rolling along in front now that he’s third-up and he could just pinch it. His best is certainly good enough and the each-way price available with online bookmakers is appealing.
