Doomben preview

What Doomben Races
Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007
When Saturday, April 22, 2023
First Race 11:33am AEST

This Saturday, the Brisbane Racing Club will host a highly competitive nine-race card from 11:57pm AEST. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with no rain expected on Tuesday or Wednesday, we anticipate racing on a Good surface for the duration of the program. The rail will be pushed out to the +10.5m after racing in the +5.5m on Saturday, so we expect the track to favour leaders and on-speed runners all day.

Mick Dittman 3YO Plate Tip: Chinny Boom

The first of three feature races will be the Mick Dittman 3YO Plate over 1110m, in which we will be siding with Chinny Boom again, after she saluted for us when first-up here over 1050m on April 8. With 200m to go, the Clinton Taylor-trained filly found herself in some traffic and trouble, but she managed to find some clear air and show her class, winning by a length. This daughter of Spirit Of Boom has only had seven career starts, winning six of them. Her only defeat came in the Mode Stakes at the end of her last preparation, where she was defeated by Stroll. Taylor and his team would have been disappointed that they drew barrier 11 of 16, however, there appears to be plenty of speed in this race, and she should be able to find a prominent position in the midfield. Ben Thompson has retained the ride, and if he can find a good position and get Chinny Boom into clear air with 200m to go, she’ll be flying home late.

Tails Stakes Tip: Dune Forty Five

We’ll be backing the Robert Heathcote-trained Dune Forty Five in the Listed Tails Stakes after he won his first two starts this preparation. This five-year-old gelding appeared to have the task ahead of him in the final 300m of his previous start, but thanks to Kyle Wilson-Taylor’s quick thinking, he changed tracks to run up the rail and gained a saloon passage inside the leader, running away with an easy 2.5 length victory over 1615m on April 1 at this track. This son of Americain has returned a much better racehorse this time in, earning him a chance to race in a Listed race for the second time in his career. Wilson-Taylor will stick with the gelding after two wins in two rides this time campaign, and we expect him to settle in the second half of the field from barrier 13. If Dune Forty Five finds the outside in the final 300m, he’ll be rattling home late to stake his claim in the final stages.

Princess Stakes Tip: Wolverine

In the Listed Princess Stakes, we will backing the ultra-consistent Kris Lees-trained Wolverine, who finished a close second behind The Vowels in the Listed Daybreak Lover at Eagle Farm last Saturday. This three-year-old filly has been placed in her last three races, including the Listed Canberra Guineas, Daybreak Lover, and Group 3 Carbine Club Stakes. There is no doubt that this girl brings the best form into this race, but she hasn’t won since January 1, 2022, and she hasn’t won on Australian soil. This filly hasn’t raced outside of Listed or Group company this preparation, and the race on Saturday looks to be one of the easiest she’s contested in a long time. Andrew Mallyon will ride Wolverine again after riding her last start at Eagle Farm, and if he can settle the filly outside runners at the back of the field, she should be too good for this field in the final stages.

Best Bet at Doomben: Sweet Margot May

Sweet Margot May, trained by Robert Heathcote, is looking to win back-to-back races for the first time in her 11-race career after dominating her rivals first-up in the Military Rose Plate at this track and distance on March 18. This four-year-old mare is a horse on the rise, and she appears to be ready to take the next step this preparation, so another win this Saturday should raise her rating and allow her to compete in better races during the Brisbane Winter Carnival. This daughter of I Am Invincible will stay at 1110m and will be ridden by Ben Thompson, who won on her last start, bringing his record to two wins and a third from three rides. Thompson should be able to settle Sweet Margot May in the middle of the field from barrier five, and if she finds clear air in the final 200m, she will be letting down with her trademark turn of foot to pick up the leaders in the final 50m.

Best Value at Doomben: North Of Eli

North Of Eli, trained by Matthew Dunn, will run in the first event of the day over 1200m, so we won’t have to wait long for our first bet of the day. This two-year-old gelding won over 1115m at Grafton last start, defeating Golden Decade by a length. This Headwater son will have to improve again in his first start in the city but given the ease with which he won his maiden, he appears to have the scope and ability to do so. Ben Thompson rode this horse two starts ago, when he finished second over 800m at Ipswich on March 17, and he will be legged back aboard on Saturday to try to go one better. North of Eli should get the run of the race from barrier one, just behind the pace, and at $19 with online bookmakers, we are happy to play.
