Doomben preview

What Doomben Races
Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007
When Saturday, March 18, 2023
First Race 11:53am AEST

The Brisbane Racing Club will host its annual Queensland Jewel Raceday out of Doomben Racecourse, with the highlight events being the $500,000 QTIS Jewel races for the two-year-olds and three-year-olds. The track is currently rated a Soft 6, but with no rain on the forecast for Friday and Saturday, we expect to be racing a very fair Good 4 surface. The rail will be in the +1.5m position for the entire circuit, with racing set to kick off at 11:53am AEST.

QTIS Jewel 2YO Tip: Mishani Royale

After a dominant win in the QTIS Jewel Prelude 2YO Fillies Plate last start, the Les Ross-trained Mishani Royale will be our top tip in the $500,000 QTIS Jewel 2YO feature on Saturday. This two-year-old filly has now won her last three starts, with her most recent win in the Prelude being the best of her career so far, as she led the field to the home turn before kicking clear and putting up a winning margin by the 200m mark and then clocking off at the 100m mark to coast home. Les Ross said after her run in the Prelude that they wanted to use the run as a barrier trial for the QTIS Jewel and have her peaking in two weeks’ time. It is hard to go past this daughter of Kobayashi, when you consider that her trainer said she would take a lot of improvement out of her fresh run. Ben Thompson has ridden this very smart filly to victory at her last two wins and he will stick on Saturday. If Thompson can get Mishani Royale to jump like she did last start and take up the lead, she will be very hard to run down in the concluding stages.

QTIS Jewel 3YO Tip: She’sgottheboom

The second of the $500,000 QTIS Jewel features will see the Desleigh Forster-trained She’sgottheboom, who will be second-up going into the QTIS Jewel for the three-year-olds after finishing sixth last start Doomben over 1110m. This three-year-old filly won her first three career starts before ending her campaign with 13th of 13 in the Group 3 Quezette Stakes at Caulfield. This daughter of Spirit Of Boom looked as though she needed the run first-up and now that she goes into her target race second-up, she looks to be a very nice bet at $6.50 with online bookmakers. James Orman will ride this filly for the first time, but from barrier one, she looks to get the run of the race and settle behind the leaders. If Orman can get She’sgottheboom off the fence and into clear air by the 300m mark, she will be running home strong to stake her claim and play a prominent role in the finish.

Best Bet at Doomben: Navajo Peak

Our best bet of the day at Doomben will be the David Payne-trained Navajo Peak who will be third-up going to 2000m, coming off a very nice runner-up finish last start when he had to carry 61kg in a Benchmark 72 at Randwick on March 4. This four-year-old gelding will be stepping up slightly in class on Saturday, however, he will be dropping 7kg and only carrying 54kg over a distance that he is undefeated at in two starts. Last preparation, this son of Territories defeated the likes of King Frankel and Main Stage over 2000m, and there isn’t a horse of that calibre in this race on Saturday, so he looks a clear on top selection for us. He will get the services of one of the most in-form jockeys in Australia in the form of Ben Thompson, and if he can push forward and settle out the leader, he will give Navajo Peak every chance to keep his unbeaten record at 2000m intact.

Next Best at Doomben: Bottega

The third race of the day will be Class 7 Handicap over 1600m, where the Lee Freedman-trained Bottega will be another one of our better bets at Doomben this weekend. This six-year-old gelding was very good when first-up last start over 1400m at Eagle Farm on March 4, where he ran up the inside of the eventual winner and went down by the barest of margins behind Morethannumberone. Going off the strength of his fresh run, this son of Snitzel should be primed to take out this event second-up over 1600m. One query that this gelding has over him is that he hasn’t ever raced at Doomben before, however, with a nice barrier (6) and with Angela Jones taking the reins, he should get every chance to travel mid-field and claim victory at his first attempt at the track. With the aid of Jones’ 1.5kg claim, Bottega gets into the race with 58.5kg and with a good amount of speed in the race, we should see him run on from the back and run over the top of the leaders in the final 150m.

Best Value at Doomben: Da Party Gal

We will be looking to blast out in the last event on Saturday, with the Tony Gollan-trained Da Party Gal currently at $10 chance with online betting sites to take out the Benchmark 78 Handicap over 1350m. This four-year-old mare was good without finishing in the placings at her first-up start on February 25 over 1200m at this track, as she ran on nicely from the rear of the field to finish in seventh only 2.7 lengths behind the winner, Xtra Gear. This daughter of Scissor Kick is unbeaten at the Doomben 1350m, recording two wins from two starts, and she also holds a good second-up record with one win and two placing from three starts. Angela Jones will stick after riding her last start and with the aid of her 1.5kg, she will only carry 53.5kg, which is below the 54kg minimum. Da Party Gal has a big finish on her, so if Jones can have her settled on the outside of horses in the middle of the pack and find the outside on the home turn, she will be running on late to stake her claim.
