What Doomben Races
Where Doomben Racecourse – 75 Hampden St, Ascot QLD 4007
When Saturday, January 21, 2023
First Race 12:03pm AEST

Racing returns to Doomben Racecourse this Saturday with a very competitive nine-race program. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with warm weather expected over Friday and Saturday, we should be in the Good range come race day. The rail will be in the +3.5m position for the entire circuit and we expect it to play fair for most of the day. The first race will jump at 12:03pm AEST.

Best Bet at Doomben: Ashgrove

Ryan Maloney and Tony Gollan will combine with Ashgrove in the Benchmark 78 Handicap over 2020m in the fourth race of the day. This four-year-old gelding has been very good at his last two starts, winning a Benchmark 70 Handicap at Eagle Farm on December 21 before running a close second in The Wave on the Gold Coast last start. This son of Dundeel is bred to run 2000m plus and race over the staying distances; however, he has only been over 2000m once for a third-place finish in the Group 3 Rough Habit Plate during his three-year-old campaign. Now that this guy is racing in very good form in his four-year-old preparation, he should be ready and fit enough to run out a strong 2020m this Saturday. Maloney will stick after riding him in his last two starts, and from barrier five we should see Ashgrove settle just behind the leaders and then look to find the outside to run home strong and prove hard to beat.

Next Best at Doomben: Vaccine

In the second leg of the quaddie, Ryan Maloney and Tony Gollan will combine once again when Vaccine takes on the Benchmark 72 Handicap over 1350m. This four-year-old mare was one of the best runs in defeat at the Gold Coast meeting on January 7, when she ran home from midfield and finished third by 1.5 lengths behind Latakia in the Magic Millions Rising Stars 3YO & 4YO Fillies & Mares race over 1300m. Maloney has ridden this daughter of Not A Single Doubt twice throughout her career to record a win and a placing, including her last-start third on the Gold Coast. Maloney and Gollan won’t be overly happy with drawing the sticky barrier of nine, but if she can step away with the field and muster early, she should be able to hold a midfield position upon settling. There looks to be good speed in this race, with most of the pace coming from outside barriers, so we should see Maloney find a midfield spot with a back to follow, and if he does, this mare will be closing off strong on the outside in the concluding stages.

Best Value at Doomben: Petunia

The penultimate race of the day will see our value play go around at massive odds once again, with Petunia from the Kelly Schweida yard currently sitting at $31 with online bookmakers. We were with this five-year-old mare at her last start when she was too good at Eagle Farm on December 28 over 1400m in a Benchmark 68 Handicap at $15. This daughter of Sebring has come back in great form this preparation, returning with two very good wins when coming from the back of the field and running over the top of the leaders late. From barrier three on Saturday, Kyle Wilson-Taylor should get the favours in the running once again and settle this girl just worse than midfield. If she can find clear air in the final 200m, this mare will be storming down the outside to try and record a hat-trick of wins.
