Betting guide for the Doncaster Handicap

Sydney-based trainer Chris Waller has dominated the Doncaster Handicap since 2013.

Betting on the Doncaster Handicap has been a Waller whitewash in recent times.

Punters who had followed the Waller runners into the Doncaster Handicap from 2013 to 2017 tasted success four of five times.

The George Ryder has produced 6 of the last 10 winners. The Rosehill Guineas and Ranvet Stakes can produce a horse back in trip as well.

The George Ryder Stakes is typically a great indicator of how a horse will go in the Doncaster, horses to complete the George Ryder Stakes/Doncaster Mile double (8) – Dame Acre (1918), Hem (1919), Dalrello (1975), Emancipation (1983), Racing To Win (2006), Haradasun (2007), Vision And Power (2009), Winx (2016).

Guy Walter trained the trifecta in 2005 (Patezza/Court’s In Session/Danni Martine) while Chris Waller trained the first four in 2014 (Sacred Falls/Royal Descent/Weary/Hawkspur).

Weights to win: Highest – Chatham/Marvel (65.5kg). Within the last 50 years – Gunsynd (60.5kg), Tobin Bronze/Super Impose (59.5kg).

Weights to win (mares): Highest – Cuddle (59kg). Within the last 50 years – Sunline (58kg), More Joyous (57.5kg) Maybe Mahal (57kg).

Since 2009, double figure barriers have won the Doncaster on 9 occasions.

In 2021 the inside four barriers filled the first four placings.

Jamie Kah scored her 5th Group 1 win in taking the 2021 Doncaster Mile which at that time equalled the record for Australian female jockeys. She has since broken that.

Recent Doncaster Mile winners

  • Celestial Legend ($6.50) produced a stunning turn-of-foot to claim victory in the Group 1 Doncaster Mile (1600m) at Randwick, earning the Les Bridge-trained colt back-to-back Group 1 victories. Les Bridge suggested Celestial Legend was the “best horse” he’s ever trained in the aftermath of the Group 1 Randwick Guineas (1600m) on March 9, and the son of Dundeel has gone on with the job thanks to a perfectly timed ride by Tyler Schiller. He was patient throughout aboard the three-year-old, and with only 49kg on his back, he was always going to get by some tiring horses in the concluding stages; however, it wasn’t until the final 150m Celestial Legend even got clear in the home straight. Another Wil ($3.60) had been well-supported throughout betting and charged to the lead with 400m to travel, however, when Jamie Kah asked for the ultimate effort, the Ciaron Maher-trained gelding seemingly peaked on the run. It left the Chris Waller-trained Militarize topping the rise and booting clear under Zac Purton, giving himself visions of last year’s edition of the Doncaster as he clung to victory aboard Mr Brightside. It wasn’t to be this time as Pericles ($41.00) arrived on the scene for Godolphin, mounting his challenge under a Blake Shinn masterclass from stall barrier 14. Meanwhile, Schiller was only now winding up aboard Celestial Legend, bolting down the outside to claim victory in one of Australia’s greatest handicaps.
  • Zac Purton and co-trainers Ben & JD Hayes have combined with Mr Brightside the Group 1 Doncaster Mile, after the training duo took out the 2022 edition with Craig Williams taking the reins. It comes after taking out the All-Star Mile as well, which continues to provide punters with a strong form-line moving forward. The last two year’s we’ve seen the form stack up as the trifecta of runners in the Doncaster Mile ran in behind Zaaki in the 2022 edition, the same has happened on Saturday afternoon with Mr Brightside, My Oberon and Nugget all being set for this after the Moonee Valley feature on March 18. With injury leaving Craig Williams sidelined for the All-Star Mile and now the Doncaster Mile, it was left to Hong Kong-leading hoop Zac Purton to take the reins and obliged in emphatic fashion for favourite backers. Mr Brightside was hard held turning for home and kicked clear of his rivals with My Oberon leading a late surge on the post, but to no avail. Nugget and Hope In Your Heart were the best of the chasers late outside the quinella, but Mr Brightside was able to get the head down in the shadows, pushed out by Zac Purton.
  • Having missed out on claiming the Cantala Stakes in the spring, Mr Brightside managed to get his Group 1 victory in the 2022 Doncaster Mile. Despite needing to travel wide for most of the trip, Craig Williams looked pretty confident throughout that he had a lapful of horse when he needed to ask for an effort. Despite market fancy I’m Thunderstruck overtake him on the home turn, fellow Victorian Mr Brightside managed to sprint the better inside the final furlong and handed trainers Ben & JD Hayes their first Group 1 success as a training partnership.
  • Jamie Kah has taken Melbourne racing by storm and now at Randwick, Jamie Kah brought her magic touch to Sydney to win one of Australia’s most prestigious races for one of the world’s biggest operations. A runaway leader of the Melbourne jockeys’ premiership, Kah became the first female rider anywhere in the world to clinch a Group 1 win for Godolphin when she combined with Cascadian to claim the Doncaster Mile.Icebath looked set to win the Doncaster when she surged through on the fence, only to be nabbed by a Godolphin horse for the second time in a feature race after finishing runner-up to Colette in the Golden Eagle. She was beaten a head with Dalasan another three-quarters of a length away.
  • Despite giving the leader of the race a near seven length start at the home turn, Nettoyer unleashed a devasting burst to claim her maiden Group 1 success. The win in the Doncaster Handicap came as a shock to many as the Sebring mare saluted at $41, which was justified due to her near eight length defeat in the Ranvet Stakes the start prior. Nettoyer’s win handed trainer Wedny Roche and jockey James Innes jnr both of their maiden Group 1 successes.
  • He’s the king of the Doncaster Handicap and Glen Boss again took the throne after guiding Brutal to a terrific win. From the wide gate Bossy took Brutal to the front and slowed the tempo down, which delivered the Kiwi easy sectionals, which proved the difference at the end of the race.
  • Dubbed the “People’s Horse” heading into a wide-open Doncaster Handicap, Happy Clapper came into the race as a top elect after a strong run behind Winx in the George Ryder Stakes. Under a patient ride from Blake Shinn, Happy Clapper hit the front at the latter stages and never looked in danger.
  • An extremely even betting field was presented in 2017 with Le Romain the starting favourite at $6, but it was It’s Somewhat that prevailed at massive odds of over $40. That John O’Shea-trained stayer used the front-runners bias to its advantage and it never looked like being beaten in the straight. Happy Clapper closed late, but the damage had been done mid-race when It’s Somewhat got away with a slow tempo.
  • Winx delivered an absolute masterclass to hand Chris Waller his fourth straight Doncaster Handicap. As a $1.80 favourite the mare encountered slight traffic coming into the straight but Bowman was good enough to take the inside passage to hand the horse its ninth straight win.
  • Chris Waller was looking to secure his third straight Doncaster Handicap win, but not many were predicting the run $8 chance Kermadec would put together in the group one race. Under a peach of a ride from Glen Boss, the dual group one winning horse surged from the middle of the pack to hit the front and run away with the race in the final 200m to record an impressive victory.
  • After winning the race as a $19 outsider the year before, few were giving Sacred Falls the chance of going back-to-back in the Doncaster Handicap. After being unsighted for much of the race Zac Purton produced the gun at the right time to topple Royal Descent, which looked like the winner at the 300m mark.
  • The first of Chris Waller’s four consecutive Doncaster Handicap titles came from an unexpected source as Sacred Falls saluted as a $19 chance. After settling down mid-field Sacred Falls was presented at the ideal time by Tommy Berry and they drew alongside superstar sprinter Pierro in the latter stages of the race. Sacred Falls ultimately got the better of the Waterhouse runner in stylish fashion.
