Udyta Clarke racing news

Wednesdays are easily the second-best day in a racing week, as fields for the weekend are released and there’s plenty of city-class racing for punters to sink their teeth into. Let’s take a look at the latest headlines in Australian horse racing.

Udyta Clarke in hospital

Cranbourne-based trainer Udyta Clarke was found unresponsive by her assistant in the early hours of Tuesday morning. She was rushed to hospital and is reportedly fighting for her life after suffering a bleed on the brain. Clarke is best known for her post-race interview on Derby Day 2017, when her recently retired favourite Rich Charm won the Group 2 Linlithgow Stakes down the Flemington straight. It is safe to say everyone in the racing industry has everything crossed in hope of a speedy recovery for the popular trainer.

SA Racing gets $2.6m cash boost

Racing in South Australia became more appealing on Tuesday when Thoroughbred Racing South Australia announced it will be offering more prize money for metro and country racing in the state. TRSA had to cut prize money by 15% at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, but consistent wagering revenue since May has allowed for kitties to be raised once again.

Caserta leaves Victoria for Queensland

Chris Caserta has become the latest jockey to move out of Victoria and head to the Sunshine State, just days after Melbourne Cup winner Michael Rodd announced he was doing the same. The jockey ranks in Queensland will worth keeping an eye on, with superstar hoop Glen Boss also set to ply his trade up north in preparations for the Magic Millions.

Restrictions easing in Queensland and Victoria

On Tuesday morning, the Queensland premier announced the state will be opening up the borders to New South Wales on December 1st, with the potential of doing the same for Victoria on the same date. This opens up the possibility of jockeys, trainers and owners being able to fly in and out of Queensland during the Magic Millions event on the Gold Coast. Down south, the return of crowds to Victorian racing looks set for next week, despite desperate attempts to make room for up to 5,000 spectators at Warrnambool for the Jericho Cup meeting on Sunday.
