Cranbourne racing preview

What Cranbourne Races
Where Cranbourne Turf Club – 50 Grant St, Cranbourne VIC 3977
When Thursday, September 7, 2023
First Race 1:30pm AEST

Racing heads to the Cranbourne Turf Club for an eight-part meeting on Thursday afternoon. The track has come up a Soft 5 at the time of acceptances, but there is plenty of rain forecast throughout Thursday, meaning we should be racing on a Soft 7 or potentially worse at one point or another. The rail comes out 9m the entire trip, with action getting underway at 1:30pm AEST.

Best Bet at Cranbourne: Harvest Moon

It was an eye-catching debut from Harvest Moon when she ran into second at Seymour over 1200m. Having settled towards the rear of the field and doing plenty wrong in running, the three-year-old filly ran on strongly to be beaten a half-length. The step up to 1300m with a run under her belt looks beneficial for the daughter of The Autumn Sun. A small field of nine should suit her as well, and despite drawing the widest barrier, the race looks perfectly set up for Harvest Moon to settle off the speed and thunder home late to break her maiden.

Best Bet

Race 2 – Silks#5 Harvest Moon (9)

3yo Filly | T: Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott | J: Jordan Childs (57kg)

Next Best at Cranbourne: New York Scandal

After 12 winless runs, New York Scandal has struck the perfect race to break her maiden. The four-year-old mare tends to do her best racing up on speed and, from barrier three, draws to gain every favour in running under Jamie Mott. She was only run down in the shadows of the winning post last time out by subsequent Geelong winner All Black. With a similar effort, New York Scandal should be getting her moment in the sun on Thursday.

Next Best

Race 4 – silks#8 New York Scandal (3)

4yo Mare | T: Aaron Laing | J: Jamie Mott (57.5kg)

Best Value at Cranbourne: Over Boost

The Paul Gorman-trained Over Boost was brave in defeat at the Cranbourne 1000m on August 20, and a return to the track and trip could put him back in the winner’s stall. Having not finished worse than fifth in each of his last nine starts, the Toronado gelding is racing in consistent form and gets his chance to pick up another win. He’ll need a touch of luck from barrier seven, but if Jamie Mott can settle Over Boost outside lead or in the one-one, he looks a great play in the second leg of the quaddie.

Best Value

Race 6 – Silks#4 Over Boost (7)

6yo Gelding | T: Paul Gorman | J: Jamie Mott (60.5kg)
