Cool Archie cemented his status as Queensland’s premier juvenile with a commanding victory in the Group 1 JJ Atkins (1600m) at Eagle Farm on Saturday, marking a significant milestone for trainer Chris Munce and his son Corey, as well as jockey Martin Harley.
The two-year-old colt, sired by Cool Aza Beel, entered the race with an impressive four-race winning streak, including triumphs in the Listed Dalrello Stakes, Group 2 Spirit of Boom Classic, and Group 2 BRC Sires’ Produce Stakes.
Despite drifting to $4.80 at the jump with horse racing bookmakers, Cool Archie delivered a performance befitting a favourite, settling in a midfield position before unleashing a powerful surge in the straight to win by 1.75 lengths over Hidden Achievement ($4.60), with Call Da Vinci ($31) finishing third.
For Martin Harley, the victory marked his first Group 1 win in Australia, adding to his previous top-level successes in the UK, Ireland, and France. Reflecting on the achievement, Harley expressed his elation:
“I’m on a plane tonight going back for Royal Ascot. And I might fly that plane myself after that.”
The win was particularly special for the Munce family, as it represented the first Group 1 victory for the father-son training partnership. Chris Munce, a former champion jockey with 42 Group 1 wins, including the Melbourne Cup and Cox Plate, was visibly emotional:
“Unbelievable. I was trying to contain my excitement until the last 100 metres and I couldn’t help myself.”

Corey Munce echoed his father’s sentiments, highlighting the significance of the achievement:
“To tick off a Group 1 in Dad and my first season of training together. You know, you can’t ask for a better start than that, can you?”
