Country racing heads to Coffs Harbour on Friday afternoon for a stacked eight-race program kicking off at 12:20pm. The $150,000 Coffs Harbour Cup (1600m) is the feature event, with the winner earning Big Dance eligibility for the first Tuesday in November. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit for the meeting, and while there are some showers on the forecast heading into race-day, we don’t expect it to affect the current Soft 5 track rating.
Coffs Harbour Cup: Hosier
The 2023 edition of the Coffs Harbour Cup looks to be a wide-open affair. Hosier, the defending champ, comes here in great order third-up after running second at Rosehill on July 22 in the Listed Winter Challenge. He was ridden to take a sit in behind the speed on that occasion, which the son of Camelot seemingly relished, storming into the minor money. He’ll need luck from barrier eight on Friday, but if he gets it, Hosier will look the winner at some stage.

Debussy was a dominant winner at Grafton on July 13, getting up by a length thanks to a perfect steer in behind the speed. The five-year-old gelding gets an ideal setup to find the winner’s enclosure again, courtesy of drawing barrier four. It means Grant Buckley has the tactical advantage to either lead or take a sit once again, and regardless of where he lands, Debussy should be very hard to chase down.
