Caulfield Cup Day betting preview
It’s the 2020 Caulfield Cup on Saturday, and the $5 million feature event is set to bring a much-needed sporting fix for many frustrated punters in Melbourne. The feature event is set to jump at 5:15pm AEDT and is the penultimate race on a 10-part card.
The forecast shows 20mm of rain on Friday night and throughout Saturday morning. The track staff will be hoping the weather bureau has not got it wrong as they have not watered the track since Blue Sapphire Stakes meeting on Wednesday, when plenty of horses pulled up sore.
The rail is back in the true position, as it was last weekend for Caulfield Guineas Day, and the first race is set to jump at 12:15pm.
Race 7 – Alfa Oro (#6)As mentioned in our Caulfield Classic betting preview, Alfa Oro looks like he’s a future superstar. He’s a fast horse, and Ben Melham usually lets him show that sustained speed. From barrier two, he should have no issue getting to the rails and dictating terms throughout the 1000m sprint. He has six wins from eight career starts, and three of those victories came on rain-affected ground. If the rain hits as forecasted, then it should prove no issue for him.

Race 6 – Fituese (#3)Some of the strongest form so far in the Victorian spring comes from horses travelling down from Sydney. We’re happy to follow that trend here with this 4YO mare, who is off a five-week freshen up after a convincing win first up over Masked Crusader. She has won on rain-affected ground in the past and is undefeated over 1100m. It is her first start in Victoria, but Craig Williams should help her get the job done in the Alinghi Stakes.

Race 9 – Toffee Tongue (#17)The other Chris Waller mare in the Caulfield Cup was one of the eye-catching runs in the Turnbull Stakes, and her recent form is actually better than what it reads. Sure, she only has one career win, but that was in the Adelaide Oaks at the end of her autumn campaign. It seems the tactic is to keep her on the rails and let her work into the race under runners, which is what she did in the Turnbull when going down by a head to Caulfield Cup favourite and stablemate Verry Elleegant.
