2020 Neds Classic betting preview
The time-honoured Caulfield Classic is the first Group race on the blockbuster 10-part card for Caulfield Cup Day. Known as the Neds Classic this year, it brings some of the best three-year-old colts and geldings in the country. A 13-horse field was accepted before the scratching of Johnny Get Angry. The Caulfield Classic is traditionally a strong form reference for the Victoria Derby in a fortnight’s time at Flemington.
The Danny O’Brien-trained gelding booked his spot in the VRC Derby with his tough win in the Derby Trial at Flemington. He was an eye-catching winner after settling towards the back half of the field and finishing strongly under a beautiful steer from Jamie Kah. He was a hard-luck story on debut when struggling to find a way out of a pocket at Geelong, but he showed what he was capable of at his next start. He showed no signs of slowing down in the concluding stages of the 1800m and should handle the 2000m on Saturday.
With rain expected in the lead up to Saturday’s meeting, the Busuttin & Young colt looks well placed to build on his impressive record to date. He is yet to miss a placing on rain-affected ground and will handle the going comfortably. He bounced back from a poor run at Flemington a fortnight ago when missing by a head after seemingly peaking on his run in the dying stages and just finding one too strong. He looks like he can handle the 2000m and should be right in the finish.
Chris Waller and Craig Williams team up with a colt who has been mixing form this campaign. He won convincingly first up at The Valley but has only run into the placings on one occasion since. In those races where he hasn’t found a way into the placings, he was settled up on speed; however, on both occasions when ridden quietly at The Valley, he showed plenty of quality. If he can have a bit of luck from barrier one with those tactics, he could spring a surprise at odds.
