Canterbury racing tips & quaddie picks | Friday, February 10
What | Canterbury Races |
Where | Canterbury Park Racecourse – King St, Canterbury NSW 2193 |
When | Friday, February 10, 2023 |
First Race | 6pm AEDT |
We are back racing under lights on Friday afternoon for a competitive eight-race program out of Canterbury Park Racecourse. The rail is moved back into the true position the entire circuit for the meeting, so expect some slight on speed favours for some key gallopers looking to press forward. The track is currently rated as a Soft 6; however, with rain expected leading into the meeting and possible during the card, we think there’s a likely chance for a downgrade into the soft range. The first race is scheduled to get underway at 6:00pm AEDT.
Best Bet at Canterbury: Mystic Mermaid
Mystic Mermaid will be looking to bounce from a terrific win last time out and we think she can win again on Friday night. She was able to get a long awaited win on February 1 at this course over the 1580m and hit the line well to beat home a progressive type in Journalism. She got a perfect map in that race and should see something very similar here from barrier three. Nash Rawiller should get every opportunity to stalk the likely leader Daytona, before peeling off her back to collect back-to-back wins. James McDonald gets off for Daytona; however, we’re happy with the appointment of Nash Rawiller and we get a fair price with online bookmakers to find out around the $5.
Best Bet
Race 6 – #7 Mystic Mermaid (3)
4yo Mare | T: Chris Waller | J: Nash Rawiller (57kg)
Next Best at Canterbury: Marnix
Canterbury sees the return of Marnix in the penultimate race of the program and we are keen to be with him at the price with online betting sites. He’s first-up after a 181-day spell and has had two trials to suggest he’s ready to return a winner. His form from last preparation around horses such as – Kalino, Sur la Mer and Jojo Was A Man – reads extremely well for a race like this and the fact we’re getting close to an each-way quote for this son of Written Tycoon is too good to pass up. His latest trial behind Ojai at Warwick Farm on January 30 was eye-catching and managed to make his way to a 0.8 length margin on very minimal riding, suggesting he can manage this first-assignment well. He’s drawn barrier two on Friday night and is a very adaptable galloper, leaving Chad Schofield plenty of options with this five-year-old gelding. We think he’ll find the leaders back throughout and with some class on his rivals can outrun some challengers that may have a fitness edge.
Next Best
Race 7 – #3 Marnix (2)
5yo Gelding | T: Richard Litt | J: Chad Schofield (60kg)
Best Value at Canterbury: Highland Cathedral
The opener is a cracking maiden race and we think Highland Cathedral represents terrific value on Friday night. You can tie the form between a few of these gallopers and our filly comes out of a race at Newcastle behind Competition on January 28. Kapakiri comes from the same race running into third while our girl run into second a nostril off the winner. They’ve opened at a monster price for Highland Cathedral considering she beat home Kapakiri by 1.3 lengths and drops 1.5kg for that performance. We get $16 and Kapakiri has come up $6; we simply can’t get them that far apart in the market so we’ll lean with the each-way prospects of Highland Cathedral. Obviously other dangers include Gago, Were Da Ya Get It and The Englishman; however, based on the map, we think our filly gets an uncontested lead with Rachel King on board and the Canterbury track should suit. This daughter by Highland Reel may want further and we could be a start early, but the price is too good to pass up here.
Best Value
Race 1 – #10 Highland Cathedral (4)
3yo Filly | T: Bjorn Baker | J: Rachel King (60kg)
