What Canterbury Races
Where Canterbury Park Racecourse – King St, Canterbury NSW 2193
When Wednesday, September 7, 2022
First Race 1:25pm AEST

HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst presents his best bets, value pick and quaddie selections for Wednesday’s metropolitan meeting at Canterbury Park. Seven races are scheduled to be contested on a what is forecast to be a Heavy 10 track, while the rail is out 3m for the entire course. The first race is set to jump at 1:25pm AEST.

Best Bet at Canterbury – Orzala

We made Orzala one of our best bets of the day at Wyong on Friday, but connections opted to scratch the unraced filly due to a wide barrier. They have found the right race for her on Wednesday, and although the Heavy 10 isn’t ideal, James McDonald has stuck with her and she is bred to handle the going, so we’re happy to be with her again. Drawn much better in gate three, this daughter of Snitzel is going to get the run of the race in the first half of the field before being asked for the supreme effort in the straight. She looks classy.

Best Bet

Race 2 – Silk #8 Orzala (3)

3yo Filly | T: John O’Shea | J: James McDonald (59kg)

Next Best at Canterbury – Owen County

John Sargent has some good three-year-old stock at the moment, and Owen County is certainly in that category. The son of Dundeel has only had five starts, with both of his wins coming on Heavy tracks, so he should feel right at home on Wednesday. At the end of last preparation, Owen County was beaten 3.5 lengths in the Group 1 J.J. Atkins over the mile at Eagle Farm on a Good 4, and then upon resumption on a Soft 5 he just looked like he needed the hitout. Now with two trials, a race and some residual fitness from his Brisbane winter campaign, he should be ready to fire on a Heavy 10 over 1600m. Hugh Bowman goes aboard and Sargent has opted to apply the tongue tie for the first time, so he should be much improved. We get a nice price about him, too.

Race 6 – Silk #3 Owen County (9)

3yo Gelding | T: John Sargent | J: Hugh Bowman (57kg)

Best Value at Canterbury – Nyika

In the opening race of the day, Tommy Berry hops aboard the Anthony Cummings-trained Nyika. This four-year-old by Medaglia D’oro ran second at this track and distance on debut on what was a Heavy 10 track before tackling the Group 2 Tulloch Stakes, where he was beaten a country mile after being eased down in the straight. We are happy to forgive that run. Josh Parr reported to the stewards that the horse was making an abnormal sound, but no issues were found and it was fresh off a throat operation. He went to the paddock and returned with a good enough trial before being completely luckless last start at Kembla Grange over 1400m. This maiden is certainly winnable, while it is hard to ignore the double-figure quote on offer at Palmerbet.
