Recent Cameron Handicap results
- After taking out the Group 3 Tibbie Stakes (1400m) aboard Terra Mater earlier in the day, Nash Rawiller added another black-type win to the resume, with Here To Shock ($2.80) claiming victory in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap (1400m) at Newcastle on Friday afternoon. The team Hayes-trained seven-year-old had proven to be a model of consistency during the winter months and returned in superb order first-up despite being headed by Another Wil in a BM100 at Caulfield on August 31. The son of Shocking was expertly ridden by Rawiller, holding a position outside the leader throughout the 1400m journey to take all luck out of the equation aboard the well-supported favourite. The Sara Ryan-trained Matcha Latte ($9.50) was the one trying to make-all under Regan Bayliss, and showed plenty of fight in the final 400m, considering he was first-up after a lengthy 538-day spell. Berkshire Shadow ($11.00) was gallant sitting on a three-wide line throughout, while Robusto ($13.00) showed a promising turn-of-speed for new trainer Bjorn Baker, but they were simply making up the numbers as the top two cleared out in the home straight. The pair sat down to battle out the finish, and while the 5kg swing in the weights appeared to be taking its toll, favourite backers could rest easy as Nash Rawiller drove Here To Shock through the line for an impressive half-length victory.
- The Chris Waller-trained Democracy Manifest opened his Stakes account in style when thrashing his rivals in the 2023 Cameron Handicap. The five-year-old was given a gun steer from apprentice Tyler Schiller who managed to save every inch of ground along the rails to go on and score by a widening 2.5 lengths from Palmetto and Spangler. His win saw Democracy Manifest break the track record for the 2300m at Newcastle.
- New South Wales apprentice hoop Reece Jones has given Wild Chap ($6.50) a peach of a ride to claim victory in the Group 3 Cameron Handicap at Newcastle. Both Jones and Wild Chap earned their maiden stakes winner by defeating Luncies ($3.20) and Character ($2.40) in a driving finish in the 1500m contest on Friday. After settling behind Dashing Willoughby ($15), who led up the race, Jones decided to wait for the gap to appear on the inside, before letting Wild Chap go through his gears to drive at Luncies and beat him by a half-head on the winning post.
- After jumping as one of the outsiders of the field, the Kim Waugh-trained Ashman ($18) has led all the way under Jeff Penza to take out the Cameron Handicap. Penza took the son of Magnus to the lead and got away with a couple of cheap sectionals mid-race before kicking clear with 300m to go. Both Sky Lab ($8.50) and Duais ($5.50) were rattling home down the outside, but Ashman held on to claim his first Group 3 victory of his career.
- Rock ($5) entered the 2020 Cameron Handicap seeking to become only the second horse to win back-to-back editions of the Group 3 contest. With the exact same combination from the previous year, Tommy Berry gave the five-year-old gelding a similar ride, but this year he put a space on his rivals and won by over 3.5 lengths. Just Thinkin’ ($7.50) and Chief Ironside ($11) were no match for the winner and they battled out the placings in the final 100m.
- The Michael, Wayne & John Hawkes-trained Rock has claimed the Group 3 Cameron Handicap after rounding the field from third last on the home turn to defeat Articus ($15) by a length. Tommy Berry settled the son of Pierro at the rear of the field with only two horses behind him, but as the field rounded the home turn Rock let down with a blistering turn of foot to glide on by his rivals and pick up his maiden Group 3 success.
