When Saturday, September 9, 2023
First Race 12:49pm AWST

The Listed Farnley Stakes headlines this Saturday’s eight-race meeting at Belmont Park in Perth. The track is currently rated a Soft 5, but with little to no rain on the forecast, we should be racing on a Good track for the whole meeting. The rail will be in the +7m position for the entire circuit, which should suit on-speed runners, and the action will kick off at 12:49pm AWST.

Farnley Stakes Tip – Nerodio

After being beaten by Valour Road in the Listed Idyllic Prince Stakes, Nerodio from the Stephanie Bakranich yard looks ideally placed to break through for his first win of the preparation. This eight-year-old gelding hasn’t finished outside the top four at any of his four starts this campaign, and his last-start second was his best performance in some time. This son of Playing God has never won at 1400m, but if there was ever a chance for him to win at the trip, it appears to be this weekend. William Pike has retained the ride, and from barrier three, he should have Nerodio close to the speed and ready to pounce at the top of the home straight.

Best Bet at Belmont – Oscar’s Fortune

Oscar’s Fortune began his career in the best possible way, dominating a small field of three-year-olds at Belmont over 1000m on August 30. This Dion Luciani-trained galloper led the field to the home turn and was challenged with 300m to go; however, when William Pike released the brakes, this gelding went through his gears and pulled away to win by just under two lengths. This son of Rich Enuff will have taken a lot of benefit out of that debut run, and now that he is fitter, he should be ready to take the step up in grade.

Next Best at Belmont – Valency

We were with Valency last start, when the Robyn Lockwood-trained mare ran on nicely to finish third behind Little Strawberry over 1000m at this track on August 26. This five-year-old mare has performed well at her first two starts this preparation over 1000m, but she is crying out for more distance, and that is what she will get in this 1200m contest. This daughter of Gingerbread Man will get a great run behind the speed from barrier two, and if Jade McNaught can get out into clear air with 300m to go, Valency should find the winner’s circle for the first time this campaign.

Race 5 – Silk #2 Valency (9)

Best Value at Belmont – Stylax

The Fred Kersley-trained Stylax was very good last start when he claimed the One Metro Win Handicap at this track and trip on August 26. After settling in the one-one position behind the leaders, Brandon Louis eased this six-year-old gelding off their heels, and he let down with a very good finish to defeat Romancing The Rock by just over half a length. On Saturday, this son of Thorn Dancer will meet the runner-up again; however, this guy will be third-up and at peak fitness, so he should have his measure once more. Louis will take the reins again, and with the aid of his 2kg claim, Stylax will only have to carry 57.5kg.

Best Value

Race 6 – Silk #2 Stylax (6)

6yo Gelding | T: Fred Kersely | J: Brandon Louis (a2) (59.5kg)
