Belmont preview

What Belmont Races
Where Belmont Park Racecourse – Saintly Entrance, Burswood WA 6100
When Saturday, July 29, 2023
First Race 11:44am AWST

Winter racing will continue at Belmont Park Racecourse this Saturday afternoon with a nine-race program scheduled. The track is rated a Heavy 8 and more rain is expected leading into the weekend, so it should be a wet, sloppy surface. The rail will be pushed out to the +3m position for the entire circuit, with the opening race set to jump at 11:44am AWST.

Best Bet at Belmont – Vast Art

Vast Art has been a model of consistency during his second racing preparation for trainer Darren McAuliffe, recording seven wins from 10 starts and only missing the placings once. Last start, the three-year-old took on the older horses and beat all bar Top Of The Pops, who nabbed him on the finish line over 1650m at this track on July 15. On Saturday, this son of Flying Artie will drop back to 1400m, and even though he meets Top Of The Pops again, he gets a 3kg weight swing in his favour. Chris Parnham will have his sixth ride on this talented gelding, and if he can find a back to follow around the home turn, Vast Art will be hard to beat.

Best Bet

Race 9 – Silk #8 Vast Art (10)

3yo Gelding | T: Darren McAuliffe | J: Chris Parnham (56.5kg)

Next Best at Belmont – Ancient Guidance

The Ryan Hill-trained Ancient Guidance was way too good for his rivals last Saturday, when he settled near last before flying home down the outside to run away with a dominant three-length victory. Staying in 2YO grade and racing against a few debutants, this race appears easier than last start. Victoria Corver will continue her strong affiliation with this son of God Has Spoken, and with the aid of her 3kg claim, he will only have to carry 55kg. If Corver can settle just worse than midfield and find the outside around the home turn, Ancient Guidance should be winning again.

Next Best

Race 4 – Silk #1 Ancient Guidance (8)

2yo Gelding | T: Ryan Hill | J: Victoria Corver (a3) (58kg)

$3.60 with Boombet

Best Value at Belmont – Crescent City

Crescent City was unlucky last start, as he got shuffled back through the field on the rail before the home turn. However, this son of Fiorente made up a stack of ground on the inside of runners in the final 200m, and even though he finished seventh of 11, he was only beaten 1.41 lengths by Top Of The Pops. Before that, the Grant & Alana Williams-trained gelding finished in the top three at his first three starts this preparation. With Victoria Corver taking 3kg off his back this weekend, and drawing a wide barrier, expect a much-improved performance.

Best Value

Race 7 – Silk #1 Crescent City (13)

5yo Gelding | T: Grant & Alana Williams | J: Victoria Corver (a3) (61.5kg)
