Belmont preview

What Bolton Sprint Day
Where Belmont Park Racecourse – Saintly Entrance, Burswood WA 6100
When Saturday, July 22, 2023
First Race 11:39am AWST

Belmont Park Racecourse will host a jam-packed nine-race program this Saturday, with the Listed Bolton Sprint highlighting the card. The track is currently rated a Soft 7, but with more rain on the forecast for Thursday and Friday, we could be bordering on Heavy come raceday. The rail will go back into the true position for the entire circuit, with racing set to commence at 11:39am AWST.

Belmont Classic Tip – Vane Tempest

The Takahide Ikenushi-trained Vane Tempest is coming off a very impressive win in a RTG72+ Handicap last start, where she defeated Featherweight and Top Of The Pops, with the third horse in that race coming out and winning at its next start. This five-year-old mare has snuck into this race with the bottom weight, and if the track is worse than a Soft 7, she will be one of the only runners that will be advantaged by the wet track. Clint Johnston-Porter will continue his strong association with this daughter of Snippetson, and from barrier two, we expect Vane Tempest to track the speed off the rail and let down with her explosive turn of foot in the final 200m.

Best Bet at Belmont – Saloon Bar

We will be looking to kick off our day with a winner when Saloon Bar from the Daniel Morton yard steps up to 1400m in a 3YO Handicap second-up after finishing second behind Universal Flair on July 8. This three-year-old gelding settled midfield for most of the 1200m contest before bursting through a gap on the inside of runners to challenge the leader in the final strides, but just missed on the line. Now that this son of Sessions will be second-up, steps up to 1400m and stays in 3YO grade, we expect Chris Parnham to adopt similar tactics to last start but go one better to record his third career victory.

Best Bet

Race 1 – Silk #1 Saloon Bar (2)

3yo Gelding | T: Daniel Morton | J: Chris Parnham (59kg)

$3.20 with Bet365

Next Best at Belmont – Duchess of Gossip

We were with the Dion Luciani-trained Duchess Of Gossip last start when she won in fine style at this track and trip on July 8, and we see no reason to jump off her this Saturday. This three-year-old filly jumped from a wide barrier at her previous start, and even though she did a little bit of work, William Pike released the brakes at the 200m mark, and she stormed clear to put the race to bed within four or five strides with 100m to go. Pike will have to navigate a passage from another wide barrier (13 of 13), but if she can settle outside the leader or find the one-one, there is no reason that Duchess Of Gossip can’t repeat the dose.

Next Best

Race 7 – Silk #12 Duchess Of Gossip (2)

3yo Filly | T: Dion Luciani | J: William Pike (54.5kg)

Best Value at Belmont – Guarding Heaven

Guarding Heaven from the Ryan Hill yard has been racing against the best two-year-olds in Western Australia to begin her career, but she keeps on finding another one that is better than her. This daughter of Safeguard has run into the smart A Lot Of Good Men at three of her six starts, where she hasn’t been far way at each of those meetings. However, with Brad Parnham jumping back aboard after missing her previous start, and with no speed in this race, we should see Guarding Heaven find the one-one and make her presence felt in the concluding stages.

Best Value

Race 3 – Silk #9 Guarding Heaven (10)

2yo Filly | T: Ryan Hill | J: Brad Parnham (54kg)
