Belmont preview

What Belmont Newmarket Day
Where Belmont Park Racecourse – Saintly Entrance, Burswood WA 6100
When Saturday, August 12, 2023
First Race 11:24am AWST

Belmont Park will host a very competitive nine-race card this Saturday afternoon, headlined by the Listed Belmont Newmarket (1200m). With rain on the forecast for Friday and Saturday, we anticipate the track staying in the Soft range for the entire meeting. The rail will be in the +8m position from the 1600m to the 400m mark and in the +5m position for the remainder. The action out of Belmont will kick off at 11:24am AWST.

Belmont Newmarket Tip – Phanta

The Chris & Michael Gangemi-trained Phanta was very impressive when winning the Listed Bolton Sprint first-up this preparation. This six-year-old gelding was way too good for his rivals last start, as he jumped well and took the lead before kicking clear early in the home straight. His fitness will have only improved for that run. There appears to be one other speed influence in this race, so jockey Brad Parnham will adopt similar front-running tactics and make them chase.

Best Bet at Belmont – Duchess Of Gossip

Duchess Of Gossip will be seeking a hat-trick of victories and appears to have found another very winnable race. The Dion Luciani-trained mare has been ultra-consistent during her first racing preparation, recording four wins in her last five starts. The four-year-old sat outside the leader at her last start, kicking clear in the home straight to record a dominant 2.5-length victory. William Pike has ridden this daughter of All American twice for two wins, and if he can settle this girl on speed from barrier four, Duchess Of Gossip should be winning again.

Next Best at Belmont – Currimundi

Currimundi returned to the winner’s circle second-up for this preparation after he defeated Allez Allez in a Benchmark 66 Handicap at this track and trip on July 29. This five-year-old gelding settled mid-field and followed the eventual runner-up through the field before peeling off his back to finish over the top. The son of Playing God will have stripped fitter for that run, while this field is of a similar standard to what he faced last time. If Shaun McGruddy can settle this guy mid-field and get him into clear air on the home turn, Currimundi will get every chance to go back-to-back.

Best Value at Belmont – Staaden

After making his long-awaited return to the races, Staaden finished third behind Castillo Del Lago over 1600m at this track on July 29. This seven-year-old gelding had nearly two years off, due to injuries he suffered back in 2019; however, the Adam Durrant-trained gelding finished his race off strong, indicating that he is looking for further. This son of Blackfriars will step up to 2100m on Saturday and if he takes natural improvement from his first run, we expect him to run a big race. With the aid of Brayden Gaerth’s 3kg claim, Staaden gets in very well at the weights and should give us a massive sight at the current $13 odds with most online bookmakers.

Best Value

Race 6 – Silk #2 Staaden (14)
