What Belmont Races
Where Belmont Park Racecourse – Saintly Entrance, Burswood WA 6100
When Saturday, May 27, 2023
First Race 11:59am AWST

The Western Australian Turf Club will host another competitive nine-race card out of Belmont Racecourse, with the Group 3 Hyperion Stakes being the highlight. With the track currently rated a Soft 6 and cool weather on the forecast for Friday and Saturday, we expect to stay in the Soft range for the entire meeting. The rail will be pushed out to the +5m position the whole way round, with racing set to kick off at 11:59am AWST.

Hyperion Stakes Tip: The Velvet Queen

The Group 3 Hyperion Stakes will see eight of the 10 runners meet again after they clashed in the Belmont Sprint two weeks ago. Of those runners we will be siding with the runner-up The Velvet Queen. The four-year-old mare was first-up from a three-month spell and she finished off her race nicely to run into second, indicating to us that she has returned in fine style for this preparation. This daughter of Universal Ruler went to another level last campaign, finishing second behind Alsephina in the Group 3 La Trice Classic, before going on to win back-to-back $100,000 races over 1500m and 1600m. In the Belmont Sprint, this mare gave Bustler a cart into the race, and with that cart and the benefit of race fitness, the three-year-old got the better of this mare, defeating her by a nose on the line. Now that she will be second-up on Saturday and will get the services of her regular jockey Chris Parnham for his 17th ride on her, we expect The Velvet Queen to turn the tables this time around.

Best Bet at Belmont: Supersession

The 1000m scamper for the three-year-olds willsee the Adam Durrant-trained Supersession return from an eight-week freshen, attempting to bring up his fourth win at his seventh career start. After rattling off three straight wins, this gelded son of Sessions ran into Leniency at his last two starts, where he was beaten 1.5 lengths and just under a length both times, before going out for a freshen. This three-year-old gelding should appreciate the amount of speed that is expected in this race, as he likes to get back and run on off the back of quickly run 1000m races. Five of the nine runners will push forward and look for the lead, which should mean that the race is run at a solid enough tempo for this guy to settle out the back, and then find the outside on the home turn and swoop over the top of them late. Clint Johnston-Porter has ridden Supersession at three of his six starts (3:2-0-1), and he will be legged aboard again for his return.

Next Best at Belmont: Shaka Zulu

The unbeaten Shaka Zulu from the Rob Gulberti yard will face his toughest test of his career to date when he takes on the One Metro Win Handicap in town for the first time on Saturday afternoon. The three-year-old gelded son of Rommel has won all three of his starts, with his win in the Abrolhos Plate at Geraldton over Jag The Joker last time out being his best win so far. Every time this gelding steps out he faces a tougher challenge and he conquerors it with an air of class and dominance. At his next start he will run into a few handy horses who have already won in metropolitan grade, but he will catch them when first-up or over a distance that they are suspect at, which is a positive for him. He looks to be the only leader in this, so Chris Parnham should be able to bounce from barrier five and work his way to the front under little riding. If Parnham can get to the front and dictate the tempo to the other runners, Shaka Zulu will be given every chance to win again and take his record to four from four.

Best Value at Belmont: She’s A Sweet Deel

The opening leg of the quaddie will see the Chris & Michael Gangemi-trained She’s A Sweet Deel return to Belmont in a RTG66+ race, after recording a hard-fought victory at Northam when first-up for the preparation on May 10. This five-year-old mare had to lug 60kg over 1300m after settling outside the leader, and she still managed to fight on and defeat the fast-finishing Princess Dejour and a wall of runner in the final 50m. Coming back to metropolitan grade will see her weight drop down to 54.5kg at a track and distance that she has had a lot of success at in her career (4:3-0-1). Clint Johnston-Porter will jump back aboard after missing the ride at Northam, and with the added benefit of that rough run when fresh as well as the weight drop, she should be very hard to hold out in the concluding stages.
