Behemoth connections confirm Crag Williams for The Goodwood

Behemoth
Behemoth posted back-to-back Group One wins, outclassing rivals in the 2020 Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes.

The South Australian racing carnival kicks off at Morphettville on Saturday afternoon with the Australasian Oaks and Robert Sangster Stakes set to be run.

Today’s race day marks just two weeks until SA’s premier race The Goodwood, where Group 1 winning superstar Behemoth is a $4 favourite with online bookmakers.

Connections had the options of local jockey Todd Pannell hopping on the back of their star sprinter but have elected to go with Craig Williams who has ridden Behemoth in both of his Group 1 wins.

Having won the Memsie Stakes and Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes during the spring at Caulfield, Craig Williams made the decision to jump off Behemoth in the 2019 edition of The Goodwood but is making no such change this time round.

Behemoth ran second in the 2019 Goodwood with Anthony Darmanin on board, and then fourth in the 2020 edition with Todd Pannell taking the ride.Craig Williams was stuck in Victoria during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Behemoth trialled at Strathalbyn on Friday morning and ambled away to a comfortable victory with jockey Kayle Crowther sitting still in the saddle.

Grand Syndicate racing manager Sam Lyons suggested that Behemoth may have another trial prior to The Goodwood.

“He is a horse that goes well into races off a jumpout close to his runs. It is something we have used well previously.” Lyons stated.

The five-year-old son of All Too Hard has already earned connections over $2,500,000 in priemoney and with a big 6-12 months ahead, who knows where Behemoth will be this time next year.
