Sunday’s $50,000 Bathurst Cup (1800m) has drawn a field of 13 horses seeking Big Dance eligibility for later in the spring. The heatwave across New South Wales is set to continue, so although the track is currently listed as a Soft 5, we expect an upgrade into the Good range. The rail is in the true position, and the first of eight races gets underway at 1:15pm AEST.
Bathurst Cup Tip: Hollywood Hero
Hollywood Hero looks beautifully placed by the Bjorn Baker barn in Sunday’s feature. The son of Sacred Falls gets to the 1800m for the first time in the preparation after three strong hitouts at the mile – the latest being a bold performance in the Dubbo Cup (1600m) on September 10. He had every horse in front of him turning for home, leaving jockey Ashley Morgan no choice but to ride for luck towards the inside. The four-year-old has drawn a marble (3) this time, so with a more positive position, Hollywood Hero can finish best.

Bathurst Best Bet: Bellucci Bella
Bellucci Bella ended her first campaign with a well-earned victory at Wellington on May 5. It came after two consistent performances over shorter trips, and when she finally stepped out to the 1100m, we saw the best version of the now five-year-old mare. She heads back to the races after 146 days off the scene, and with no official barrier trial to note, we must believe trainer Clint Lundholm still has her up to the mark at home. She’s lightly raced and still holds plenty of upside, so look for Belluci Bella to show her class on resumption.

Next Best at Bathurst: Flying Molly
Flying Molly is set to make her racing debut, and we can mark her a lot shorter than the +550 on offer with online bookmakers. She’s only had one barrier trial leading into the weekend; however, it showed this daughter of Winning Rupert has a ton of ability. She was ridden with cover at Mudgee on September 3, and when shown the persuader, she responded impressively, ducking up the inside to score by 1.5 lengths. She’s still very raw, being an unraced four-year-old, but she’s worth taking a risk on.
