Ballarat betting preview

What Ballarat Races
Where Ballarat Turf Club – 240 Kennedys Rd, Miners Rest VIC 3352
When Sunday, May 28, 2023
First Race 1pm AEST

Racing heads to Ballarat Turf Club for the third time in six days, with an eight-race card scheduled for the turf track on Sunday afternoon. A typical late autumn day is forecast for Ballarat, with intermittent showers expected throughout the day. The track came up a Soft 6 at the time of acceptances, but with that forecast rain and a somewhat tired track, we expect to be racing on a Heavy 8 come the opening event. The rail sticks to the true position and racing commences at 1pm AEST.

Best Bet at Ballarat: Sir Atlas

The Lindsey Smith-trained Sir Atlas built on his debut victory earlier in the year with a smart first-up win at Geelong on May 12. He gave his rivals a start and a beating over the 1443m on that day and looked like he would only appreciate getting out in trip. The 1500m second-up looks ideal, and despite a potentially sticky draw from barrier one for a get-back-and-run-on horse, Sir Atlas looks to be the best runner in the race. With clear air at the right time, Beau Mertens will have this bloke hitting top gear in the final furlong.

Next Best at Ballarat: Bitcoin

Bitcoin put the best part of five lengths on his rivals at the Ballarat 2000m last time out, hitting the front with 200m and showing a turn of foot that his maiden rivals simply could not match. He is already Stakes-placed in his career back in New Zealand, and if he builds on that last-start win, it is hard to see him getting beaten. From barrier four, Damien Oliver will have this bloke positioned in the one-one with a bit of luck, and when asked to quicken at the top of the straight, Bitcoin should be hitting the line the best.

Race 2 – Silks#7 Wichitall (10)

Best Value at Ballarat: Galathilion

The Shawn Mathrick-trained Galathilion has come back in decent enough form this time in to suggest a blowout result isn’t out of the question in race three. The four-year-old gelding has placed at both runs this campaign, so there is merit in an each-way play here . He will roll forward under Brian Higgins from barrier eight, and if the pair can lob outside leader or in the one-one, he brings a bit of race fitness to this affair. Should it come down to the battle of the fittest on a deteriorating deck, Galathilion will have a tactical advantage on some of his rivals. At a big price with online bookmakers, this is worth a speck.

Best Value

Race 3 – Silks#2 Galathilion (8)
