2021 Albury Gold Cup preview – March 19, 2021
A big field of 16 gallopers will go around in the 2021 Listed Albury Gold Cup, which is scheduled to jump at 4:50pm AEDT this Friday. This year’s edition sees Mahamedeis and Entente share favouritism for the $200,000 feature over 2000m. There should be a decent amount of speed in the race with Entente, Hush Writer, Lord Vladivostok and Sikorsky likely to go forward, while Kiss The Bride, Maid Of Ore and The Lord Mayor should be handy to the pace.
Mahamedeis is the class horse in this race for trainer Nick Ryan, and he is very well in at the weights with just 58kg. Rhys McLeod has ridden the horse on numerous occasions and has a good record on board the gelded son of Magnus. Coming off a 3.5-length defeat in the Group 2 Blamey Stakes last start to compete in an average Listed event at Albury should be the class drop he needs to get a win.
Similarly to Mahamedeis, The Lord Mayor looks very well placed after running fourth behind Mount Popa and Sacramento last start in the Listed Randwick City Cup over 2000m. He does rise 1.5kg to 56.5kg in this, but he faces arguably weaker opposition. Drawn in barrier two under Lee Magorrian, he can get a lovely run just off the pace and then finish strongly over the top if the runs come.
Declares War is looking to claim his third country cup in just four starts, having taken out both the Camperdown Cup and the Wangaratta Cup. He also won the Listed Birthday Cup at Morphettville two starts ago when beating Eperdument, who has since finished second in the Adelaide Cup. Patrick Moloney partnered this galloper in both cup wins and will get every chance with 54.5kg and barrier nine. He can race handy to the speed and will be right in the mix if he finds cover early.
