2021 Zeditave Stakes betting preview – Saturday, February 20

The Group 3 Zeditave Stakes kickstarts a run of eight Group races at Caulfield on Saturday afternoon. Despite a small field of seven colts and geldings set to go around, the standard looks to be quite high. The scratching of Vowmaster opens the market up a little bit, with It’sourtime (#5) for Danny O’Brien set to go around as favourite. The 2020 Zeditave Stakes was taken out by He’ll Haunt Us, while superstar sprinter Santa Ana Lane took this race out back in 2015.

The speed map looks to be an interesting one. Oxley Road (#7) has accepted to race at Moonee Valley on Friday night, but we will do this as if he is running. The Peter Moody colt looks to get a quiet time of it out in front with all but perhaps Saltpeter (#4) looking to settle towards the back half of the field.

Valaquenta (#3) had plenty of excuses first up at Randwick on January 23 and looks well placed to take out the Zeditave Stakes after four weeks off. The Godolphin gelding has won at Caulfield when second up, but that was over 1100m two campaigns ago. He was travelling nicely first up before copping a bump that pushed him four wide without cover, and in the end he was well beaten. He looks set to get a hot tempo from out in front, which will suit his get-back-and-run-on style. He should not be far from the speed given the small field and will look to savage the line late.

Having just been beaten a length in the Group 2 Autumn Stakes after leading the field up to the tearaway leaders, It’sourtime has been rightly put up as favourite for the Zeditave Stakes following the scratching of Vowmaster. He has a nice turn of foot and should benefit from the slight drop in grade, but there is a real possibility he could get stuck on the fence in what promises to be a highly tactical race. Hence, we do not have him on top, but with a little luck late he will take some holding out under Jamie Kah.

If Oxley Road does go around and runs up to his debut performance down the Flemington straight, he will certainly take some catching. However, we should get better than $3.30 on the day to find out.
