2021 Sires’ Produce Stakes betting preview

The Group 2 Sires’ Produce Stakes sees a field of 14 two-year-olds compete over 1400m for a $200,000 purse at Flemington on Saturday. The race has produced a few handy horses over the years, none more so than Jameka back in 2015. The winner last year was Lunar Fox, who surprised the punting world last week when saluting at $151 in the Australian Guineas.

The top two in the market look to be the ones who will settle first and second in the running. Lightsaber looks to be the leader of the race, with second elect Paulele expected to settle just outside the Peter Moody-trained colt. Kooled, who looks to be the main rival to the favourites, will give his rivals a fair head start as he looks to settle towards the rear of the field.

We have been with Lightsaber (#3) for both of his last two wins at Sandown, and those performances have not shown us any reason to get off him in the Sires’ Produce Stakes. His win two starts back on February 2 showed plenty of heart as he was trapped three wide for the trip up on speed but was still going away from them over 1300m. He then backed it up with an all-the-way victory on February 17 and gave his rivals a galloping lesson over the 1400m when lugging 59kg. Lightsaber drops 2kg off that last-start win, and with Luke Nolen hopping on board he looks hard to catch in this.

Coming back to Melbourne for the first time since his debut is the Godolphin-trained Paulele (#2). The colt returned with a two-length defeat behind the handy Home Affairs in the Silver Slipper Stakes on February 20 on a Soft 7, and he gets back on top of the ground here. He showed plenty of promise in his spring campaign with an all-the-way victory at Randwick when producing the best last 200m split of the race. He should have no issue seeing out the 1400m, and if he runs up to the run in the Silver Slipper, then there is no reason why he cannot fight out the finish here.

The main danger to the favourites looks to come from Readily Availabull (#1), who also finished around two lengths behind Home Affairs in the Silver Slipper. Another to keep an eye on is Kooled (#9), who made up a stack of ground in the home straight on debut at Canterbury to just miss and must be included in all exotics for the Sires’ Produce Stakes.
