The 2021 Manihi Classic has attracted a strong field of 15 sprinters set to battle it out for $102,250 at Morphettville on Saturday afternoon. With former Blue Diamond Stakes winner Lyre headlining the field, and reigning Manihi Classic winner Shamino going around it looks set to be one of the best races at Morphettville on Saturday. The aforementioned Lyre and Humma Humma are joint $5 favourites with Australian racing betting sites in early markets with online bookmakers and do look the ones to beat purely based on class.

It looks to be a red hot battle for early supremacy with Elderflower, Little Rich Boy and Mileva all looking to lead the field.

Despite being the obvious class in the race, Lyre often finds herself in trouble throughout the running. Hence why we are happy to side with the John McArdle-trained Humma Humma who will be charging home down the outside from the rear of the field. The Victorian has a victory over the classy Behemoth at the Morphettville 1100m back in April 2019, as well as a narrow runner up performance behind Krone over the same track and distance. Jamie Mott follows Humma Humma across to Adelaide and is only booked for a couple of rides on Saturday, so it shows how much of a chance the stable thinks she has. Humma Humma’s return in the Bob Hoysted at Flemington showed she has returned in good form finishing just a length off Fabergino. If she runs to that form here Humma Humma will be hard to hold out.

Lyre, without a doubt is the class runner in the field but will need plenty of luck in the running from barrier six. The Anthony Freedman-trained mare has not won since her success in the Blue Diamond Stakes in 2019, which has no doubt frustrated punters around the country. If Lyre manages to find a gap in the home running she has a turn of foot that plenty of these will not be able to match.

If there is going to be an upset in the Manihi Classic, then Elderflower for Michael Hickmott and Jessica Eaton could run a huge race from out in front. The mare out of Toronado will appreciate going around with the minimum weight of 54kg on her back and could go all the way from barrier to box with a weight advantage over some of her main market rivals.
