Manfred Stakes Betting Preview – January 30, 2021

The 2021 Group 3 Manfred Stakes is one of the featured events at Caulfield on Saturday afternoon where a field of six has assembled for the 1200m contest. With the Caulfield Guineas runner-up Aysar and the favourite from that event, Tagaloa, both resuming here, plenty of eyes will be on this race come Saturday afternoon. The Manfred Stakes is set to jump at 3:20pm AEDT.

The market in the 2021 Manfred is hard to read, in all honesty. When markets opened and $3.40 was available for Aysar, it was hard to imagine anything else being shorter than the Dabernig & Hayes trained colt. He was beaten under a half length in the Caulfield Guineas back in the spring behind Ole Kirk, and then was a similar margin second in the Carbine Club Stakes three weeks later. The field he meets here is arguably easier than his last couple of runs in the spring and with a win and a third-place finish when first up he looks hard to go past in the Manfred Stakes.

Judging by the reports coming out of the Busuttin & Young stable Tagaloa has come back as good as they have ever seen the three-year-old colt. Last year’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner is yet to taste victory again since that day, and was beaten a long way out in the Caulfield Guineas. With Mark Zahra set to hop onboard for the first time in his career, we expect Tagaloa to go forward and take a seat outside the leader, and that has been no disadvantage in times gone by on a rain-affected Caulfield track. If he can handle the big weight and the small field he will be a huge danger to our top selection despite still being a maiden when first up.

From a maiden victory over the 1100m at Caulfield on January 13, to the Group 3 Manfred Stakes against a couple of star gallopers. All Stardom will face his hardest test to date, but we are backing him to run a huge race at a price. Outside of our top two selections and perhaps an in-form Portland Sky what has the remainder of the field actually beaten? He will be up on speed and the best jockey in Melbourne, Jamie Kah, retains the ride. If the horses who are first up are not fit to go right now, he could run away with the prize.
