Full Rosehill racing preview and tips

Saturday’s feature at Rosehill sees the three-year-old colts and geldings do battle over 1400m at Group 2 level in the Hobartville Stakes. Three horses all but share favouritism, with New Zealand expat and unbeaten son of Sacred Falls the $4 favourite, ahead of Peltzer and North Pacific at $4.20 and $5 respectively. There appears to be plenty of speed on paper, with Peltzer and Easy Campese the likely leaders, while Lion’s Roar, Prague, Global Quest and Prime Star will all be handy.

We have been taken by Murray Baker & Andrew Forsman’s gelding Aegon in his four career wins to date and believe he may be one of, if not the best Kiwi to come to our shores in recent years; Melody Belle aside. The son of Sacred Falls was a gritty winner at Ellerslie last time out in the Karaka Millions 3YO Classic, coming from a long way back to get up over Amarelinha who has since won again. He comes back in distance to 1400m which is a slight query, but the heavy conditions will suit him and the fast tempo of the race will set it up for a horse like him, who can really grind it out. Barrier four for Hugh Bowman is ideal, as he can settle midfield and charge home late. Have something on him in the Doncaster Mile before he runs on Saturday too.

North Pacific only just missed in the Group 1 Golden Rose at this track and distance in the Spring behind Ole Kirk, so he cannot be overlooked. The Hawkes-trained son of Brazen Beau has only won two races, but both came on Heavy tracks with a cumulative margin of 7.8L so he will get the conditions to favour. First-up, he was a touch lacklustre given he was an even money favourite, but the inside alley and 1200m journey brought him unstuck. This time, out to 1400m and drawn wide in barrier nine, he will have plenty of galloping room and should be able to wind up late. James McDonald knows the horse well too, he is the danger.

John O’Shea’s Lion Roar may not be forward enough to win this, but we want to highlight him as we believe he could surprise a few at the $17 quote. The Contributer gelding has won three of five and finished second in his other two runs including a 0.8L defeat in the Group 1 Spring Champion Stakes to Montefilia. He won his maiden on a Heavy 9 at Wagga, and ran second when first-up to Mo’unga over 1400m in August, so it isn’t completely against him. He has trialled well enough leading up to his first-up assignment, and maps very well from barrier three for Brenton Avdulla. He should be able to box seat from the gate and be given every chance. Follow him through the Autumn as he heads towards a Randwick and Rosehill Guineas.
