The Group 3 D C McKay Stakes is the first of the Group races on the nine-part card at Morphettville on Saturday afternoon. The 1100m event has attracted a field of 10 sprinters who will battle it out for the $127,250 on offer. The natural leader in the race looks to be Savatoxl, who will make sure this is a genuinely run 1100m dash for the cash, wile fancied runners Pandemic, Viridine and Sword Of Mercy are all expected to be in the second half of the field. HorseBetting.com.au brings you the top odds, best bets and strategy for one of the featured events on the Morphettville card.

D C McKay Stakes betting preview

Viridine has a clear class edge on his rivals in the D C McKay Stakes, and despite needing to lug 60.5kg on his back, he will take some beating on Saturday afternoon. The son of Poet’s Voice is a proven black-type performer with two Group victories and four Listed successes in his career. He will, however, need a little bit of luck to go his way with his ‘get back and run on’ pattern. If he gets the race run to suit, then his turn of foot should be too sharp for the rest of this field.

Our top pick’s stablemate Pandemic is the clear danger and is set to go around as favourite in the D C McKay Stakes. The four-year-old gelding has a 6.5kg weight advantage on his fellow Godolphin runner and will get the services of William Pike for the first time, which are both big ticks. He will, however, need to overturn a couple of poor efforts in similar grade at his last two runs, going down by close to four lengths on both occasions. If Pandemic can settle closer to the speed and outsprint his stablemate, he will be a big chance on Saturday.

The market has it down to three chances, and the third of that trio is the Ellerton & Zahra-trained Sword Of Mercy. Three runs back, the Sebring mare was beaten a length in the Group 1 Oakleigh Plate on February 20, and at her last start she was beaten just over a length by Sisstar, who goes around in the Group 1 Robert Sangster Stakes later in the day. Regular jockey Damian Lane heads across to Morphettville for the ride, and from the wide barrier he should head towards the rear of the field and have Sword Of Mercy savaging the line late in the piece.
