Yamazaki to chase black type

The huge money being paid for black-type winning mares has proved an incentive for Yamazaki to tackle the Listed Phoenix Stakes at the Sunshine Coast.

Trainer Chris Anderson has Yamazaki in the Group One J J Atkins Stakes on Saturday week and she looks assured of a start.

He admits it would be a big ask for Yamazaki to back up from the Phoenix in the Atkins.

“She is in the Atkins field and it would be great to have a Group one runner. But it would mean she would have to run three weeks in a row and that is a big ask for a two-year-old filly,” Anderson said.

“I have a lot of time for her. I know her last-start win was a maiden at Ipswich. But she had no right to win the trouble she ran into.

“I think she is a very progressive filly and I think is looking for the 1600 metres.”

Anderson said it was vital in this day and age to get black-type for fillies and mares.

“Just look at the Magic Millions sales this week. A mare with black-type brings plenty and several went for more than $1 million,” he said.

“The question is can we get black-type against the Atkins horses or are we a better chance in the Phoenix.”

Anderson has booked premier jockey Jeff Lloyd for Yamazaki and expects the filly to handle the wet track on her breeding as she is out of a Commands mare.
