HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst brings you his best bets and quaddie numbers for the Wyong Gold Cup meeting on Friday, including his top picks in the feature race and the Mona Lisa Stakes. The track is rated a Soft 5 and the rail is in the true position for the entire course. The first of eight races is due to jump at 12:50pm AEST.
Wyong Gold Cup: Berdibek
The John O’Shea-trained Berdibek was a good winner in the Listed Rowley Mile at Hawkesbury last start, defeating Queensland Derby winner Kukeracha by half a length. The gelding now rises in trip to 2100m, which will suit as he carries residual fitness from earlier in the winter. The eight-year-old son of Dark Shadow ran fourth in the Grafton Cup two starts back over 2350m behind Purrfect Deal and Laure Me In and does have to carry 2.5kg more than what he did that day, but we are getting an each-way quote to find out. Hugh Bowman hops back on and will give the grey a patient ride from the wide alley.
Race 7 – Berdibek (#5)Mona Lisa Stakes: Great News
One that can really stamp herself as a top mare this spring is Kim Waugh’s five-year-old Great News. The daughter of Uncle Mo nearly won the Group 3 Toy Show Quality first-up at Randwick but couldn’t quite fend off the challenge from Fituese late. She has had 11 career starts, winning five, placing second a further five times and running third on the other occasion, the latter of which came all the way back in her second start. She has drawn awkwardly in barrier 14, which present Josh Parr with a few obstacles, but he should be able to get the mare into a handy spot over the 1350m journey. If she replicates her first-up run, it should be Great News for connections.
Race 6 – Great News (#3)Wyong Best Bet: Bojack
The Waterhouse & Bott stable will leg up Tim Clark in the third race of the day aboard Bojack as he looks to return to the winner’s stall. The four-year-old won stylishly on debut at Gosford before leading and fading behind Nordicus at this track, with that horse going on to win a few races since. The son of Snitzel returned in good style on July 25 when third behind Windsweep and Sammy and should be ready to go after a trial at Randwick on August 20. From barrier eight, Clark will take the gelding straight to the front over the 1300m and should be hard to catch. He looks a smart horse to follow.
