Wodonga racing preview

There are eight races set down for decision on Thursday afternoon at Wodonga as racing in Victoria heads to the state’s north. The track is rated a Soft 5 at the time of writing, but a favourable forecast in the lead up should see us racing on a Good 4. With the rail in the true position throughout, every runner will have their chance to push their case forward. The first at Wodonga will face the starter at 1:30pm AEDT.

Best BetRace 4 – Billie De Lune (#1) $1.90 with Sportsbet

The best tip to come out of the Wodonga meeting on Thursday looks set to come out of the Maher & Eustace stable with their four-year-old mare Billie De Lune. The mare enters this race second up after a runner-up finish at Kyneton a fortnight ago. She went around at Kyneton as a well-backed favourite and should receive plenty of market support in this maiden for fillies and mares. From barrier one, she maps to do no work in the running just off the leaders’ heels. With a bit of luck at the top of the straight, she should prove hard to hold out.

Next BestRace 5 – Mellors (#1) $2.70 with Sportsbet

From one in-form stable to another, this time with Dabernig & Hayes. We’re hoping the class runner in this BM64 will be too strong to hold out on the basis of his last two races, which ended in consecutive runner-up finishes at Pakenham. He absolutely relishes the 1600m, where he has won on four occasions, and regains the services of Blaike McDougall, who has had success on this horse before. Mellors maps to take up the lead form the wide gate and has the potential to lead from barrier to box.

Best ValueRace 2 – I Am Ready (#4) $6.50 with Sportsbet

We’ll be hoping the combination of Lloyd Kennewell and Joe Bowditch can go one better with this three-year-old when she enters this maiden event for fillies second up. First up she had to do a fair bit of work early on to get across to the rails to lead at Bairnsdale, and that left her vulnerable over the concluding stages. She did manage to put a gap back to third in that race, showing she has plenty of ability. From barrier eight here, she maps to sit outside the leader, and with a bit of luck her race fitness will get her across the line in front.
