Winx Guineas 2020 betting tips, strategy & odds

Starla
Champion trainer Chris Waller is seeking a sentimental win in the Winx Guineas with Starla.

The Group 3 Winx Guineas takes top billing on the Sunshine Coast’s nine-race program on Saturday. The mile race for three-year-olds has been won by some stars of the turf including Winx, The Bostonian and Baccarat Baby, although the 2020 edition doesn’t look to have quite the same quality as previous years. Last-start winner Star Of Michelin is the current favourite for local trainer Stuart Kendrick, ahead of Wapiti and Knight Mariner. Wapiti will look to lead the race, with Samurai and Al Jood also likely to be handy.

Best Bet
Starla @ $6 Sportsbet

Starla goes in on top after two good wins at Warwick Farm and Doomben. The Chris Waller filly had a great two-year-old season and had been plain earlier in the year before hitting her straps at her last two outings. Her last run impressed us, railing through to find the front 200m from home before winning comfortably over Wandabaa and Arthur In Charge. Drawn barrier one under Michael Cahill, we expect her to get a lovely run in transit and boot through in the straight to finish over the top of them. Her 1600m form is great (4:2-1-0) and she looks ready to step up to that trip at this stage in her prep. One slight concern is the wet ground, with only one placing from five starts on rain-affected going. If she gets a soft run, which she should, she will take plenty of beating.

Second Best
Wapiti @ $4.80 Sportsbet

Wapiti will look to either lead or be right on the leader’s back from barrier 10, which should suit for what shapes to be a slowly run race. The gelding has finished in the top four in his last six runs, which include placings behind Ballistic Boy and Cellarmaid. He has had one run over 1600m at this course and that resulted in a 0.3-length second to Rough Habit Plate winner Ballistic Boy, which is very good form for a race like this. He is a heavy-track winner, which is an important note for this race, and will be suited by the drop in distance. Sean Cormack has a good affiliation with the Love Conquers All gelding, with two wins and two seconds from six rides. Expect Wapiti to be in it for a very long way.

Next Best
Star Of Michelin @ $3.90 Sportsbet

Star Of Michelin gets onto his home track for just the second time and will be suited by the big, long straight. All four of his wins have come at Eagle Farm, which is a very similar style track to Corbould Park, so he is bound to enjoy it. He is a winner over 1600m beating Profit and is undefeated on a wet track (1:1-0-0), so the heavy rating shouldn’t be an issue. He will have to perform on the seven-day turnaround, but his last win was very impressive in coming from last to win by over a length. Dale Smith will ride again and should get in a good spot from barrier four, allowing the gelding to relax and get into his work in the straight.
