Listed racing heads to Royal Randwick on Saturday for this year’s running of the Winter Challenge (1500m). HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst presents his best bets and quaddie numbers for the 10-race program, as well as his top selection in the $160,000 feature race. The track is a Heavy 10 and rain has been constant in Sydney, so it isn’t ideal for racing, while the rail is out 12m from the 1000m to the winning post and 10m for the remainder of the course. The first race is set to get underway at 11:15am AEST.
Winter Challenge Best Bet – Carif
No doubt Jojo Was A Man will take plenty of beating in this race, but the run of Carif in the Civic Stakes (1400m) really perked our interest. The Peter & Paul Snowden-trained six-year-old will want another lap, but he was really good fresh when racing handy and then attacking the line to be beaten only two lengths by Taksu. The son of So You Think drops from 57kg to 53kg on Saturday, gets out to 1500m and has drawn to do no work from barrier six. Although the wet track is a genuine concern for Carif, he’s placed twice on heavy going and the bog surface will make this feel more like a 1600m or 1800m event which will aid his chances. At $26, we are happy to be with him.

Best Bet at Randwick – Sunrise Ruby
Sunrise Ruby’s first-up run was excellent when a fast-finishing second behind Lady Brook over 1100m at this track on July 9. It is fair to say that if that race was over 1200m, she would have won the race, finishing three-quarters of a length off the winner. Those two mares meet again over 1200m on Saturday, and Sunrise Ruby meets Lady Brook 1.5kg better at the weights and will have a bit more fitness in her legs now that she’s second-up. Brenton Avdulla hops aboard the daughter of Casino Prince, barrier 11 will allow her to settle into a rhythm and then she should be able to finish off strongly on her favoured wet track. This is a nice race for Sunrise Ruby and she can further enhance her Kosciuszko credentials.

Next Best at Randwick – Prime Candidate
Prime Candidate is going to have to concede a bit of weight to his rivals, but the form he is in, the 60kg is warranted. Trained by Bjorn Baker and to be ridden by James McDonald, this seven-year-old gelding was last seen finishing midfield in the Ramornie Handicap at Grafton, but before that, he was runner-up to Juan Diva in the Group 3 Healy Stakes at Eagle Farm, beating home the Ramornie winner, Ranges. While he isn’t a noted mudlark, the drop back to 1100m on a Heavy track shouldn’t be too testing, so we’re willing to give him a chance to prove he is too classy. He gets plenty of favours from barrier six and he should take some beating.

Best Value at Randwick – Spiritchaser
Spiritchaser might be pretty smart, so we aren’t prepared to let her go around on debut without us. The John Sargent-trained two-year-old has had the benefit of three trials, and in winning two of them, she’s above average. Going back to her first trial in January, the filly by Show A Heart beat home subsequent Group 1 winner She’s Extreme, while her first trial back this preparation saw her win comfortably over Mumbai Jewel and Sweet Ride, with the latter winning her next trial by four lengths. Provided she jumps cleanly from barrier six under Ellen Hennessy, she will take plenty of catching with just 51kg on her back.
