Betting Guide
Date: Saturday, November 1, 2025
Location: Rosehill Racecourse – Sydney, New South Wales
Prize Money: $3,000,000
Distance: 1300m

The Russell Balding Stakes is a race that is held at Rosehill Racecourse for horses aged three-years-old and older, run under set weight conditions and boasts a $3,000,000 prize pool.

The Russell Balding Stakes was first introduced in 2019 when the race was run as the Redzel Stakes.

Several runners and all of the winners of the Russell Balding Stakes have come through The Everest earlier in the spring, indicating that the $10 million race is the ideal form reference for the Russell Balding Stakes.

The 2024 edition of the race will be known as the Think About It Stakes, with it named after the Joseph Pride-trained five-year-old gelding that won the Everest on October 14, 2023.

For Everest runners that compete in the Russell Balding Stakes, a $750,000 bonus is up for grabs if they are able to claim victory.

Originally run as the Winners Stakes in honour of the previous year’s Everest winner, as of 2024 the race was renamed the Russell Balding Stakes in honour of former Racing NSW chairman, Russell Balding.

Recent Russell Balding Stakes results

  • Ciaron Maher & Craig Williams have combined with Bella Nipotina once again to claim back-to-back wins in the Russell Balding Stakes (1300m). The seven-year-old marvel looked perfectly placed to continue winning ways after a tough victory in the 2024 Everest (1200m) a fortnight ago, stepping to the 1300m against a similar group of gallopers. The race setup perfectly for the daughter of Pride Of Dubai, with Williams lobbing into the one-one from barrier three, as Coal Crusher ($15.00) and I Am Me ($10.00) went along at a strong tempo throughout the journey. Private Eye ($8.00) was able to utilize barrier one to sit on Bella’s inside every step of the way, while Sunshine In Paris ($4.40) and Lady Laguna ($17.00) were poised to make strong inroads down the centre of the course. They were all playing for second in the end, however, as Bella Nipotina never looked in doubt, cruising to the lead before putting pave to her rivals in the concluding stages. It’s hard to believe it’s the first time Bella Nipotina has together back-to-back wins in her 56-start career, taking her over an astonishing $20 million in prize money for connections.
  • Bella Nipotina ($9.00) has caused a minor upset in the Giga Kick Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill, storming up the inside running rail to score under Craig Williams. The $3 million feature had been touted as a two-horse affair as the Everest (1200m) pair of Think About It ($1.95) and Private Eye ($2.60) locked horns once again; however, it was the Ciaron Maher & David Eustace-trained mare going under the radar of most. She put the writing on the wall last start, powering into a third-place finish in the Group 3 Sydney Stakes (1200m), only a race prior to the Everest, and proved on Saturday, she wouldn’t have been out of place in the $20 million feature. It was an excellent steer from senior jockey Craig Williams slicing through the inside running rail, despite not having much room to manoeuvre. At one stage you would’ve been forgiven thinking Private Eye had pinched a big enough break, but Bella Nipotina showed plenty of fight to secure a nose victory.
  • Private Eye (+450) has flown home from the rear of the field with a huge run to take out the 2022 $3 million Winners Stakes (1300m) at Rosehill Gardens for Joe Pride. Once again under the guidance of Brenton Avdulla, Private Eye was settled towards the rear of the field before unleashing a blistering turn of foot down the Rosehill straight. Mazu (+400) battled away on the inside and finished second, while Kementari (+2000) came down the outside with the winner to finish third.
  • Nash Rawiller and Eduardo (+200) have led every step of the way in the $3 million Winners Stakes. The Joseph Pride-trained sprinter bounced to the front and was once he was able to get an uncontested lead, he was always going to be hard to run down. He scooted further in front turning for home and held Lost And Running (+650) at bay by 1.25 lengths with Standout (+2000) another 2.5 lengths away third.
  • On a wet day at Rosehill, Jason Collett has given the Gordon Richards-trained Gytrash (+260) a well timed ride to claim the Winners Stakes. After settling on-speed, Haut Brion Her (+270) appeared to have stolen the race at the 150m mark as she built a three length lead over the eventual winner. However, the South Australian star sprinter let down with his blistering turn of foot in the final 200m and motored over the top of the leader late to claim victory.
  • After getting no luck in The Everest earlier in the campaign, Pierata (+140) claimed his consolation victory in the Winners Stakes. Although it was named the consolation race, the Greg Hickman-trained sprinter picked up $1.3 million in prize money. Tommy Berry gave his mount a great ride and when he pushed the button, the race favourite flew down the outside to beat Trekking (+450) and Le Romain (+2500), who filled the placings.
